Celebrity scandals and blind items spread like wildfire in a nation that has among the fastest internet and highest suicide rates in the world. But where do these timely salacious stories and anonymous scoops come from? Korea's notorious tabloid culture comes under fire in the suspense thriller Tabloid Truth from director Kim Kwang Sik (My Dear Desperado).

When a malicious rumor drives an actress to suicide, her manager sets out to find the people responsible and make them pay. His pursuit of the truth leads him into a corrupt world in which gossip is spread, traded and manipulated as part of a bigger game of power, money and politics. Kim Kang Woo stars as the manager up against great odds while Jung Jin Young and Ko Chang Suk play a tabloid distributor and a wire-tapping expert who assist his investigation. Park Sung Woong, Park Won Sang and Ahn Sung Ki also appear in Tabloid Truth.

Casualties from Stylised Rumour (A) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When devoted manager Woo-gon (Kang-woo Kim) discovers his protégé actress Mi-jin (Won-hee Go) hanging in their rented apartment bathroom, his rage is so intense that he won’t stop until he discovers the root cause of her suicide. Woo-gon knows enough, that a false malicious on-line rumour of a secret sexual relationship between Mi-jin and a top company commissioner drove her to fatal despair before a related press meeting. Woo-gon was no mere employer, together with Mi-jin from virtually nothing Woo-gon’s hot wired managerial entertainment talent had ultimately brought Mi-jin to stardom and he knew that Mi-jin’s only ‘scandal’ would be her wish for a success at Cannes, so impervious was Mi-jin to any form of lurid indignity.

But after Mi-jin’s death, a vengeful Woo-gon drives deep and violently into the world of gossip makers, discovering via stock market tip sheets to ‘juice baited’ tabloids, a regular profitable mechanism where salacious rumour, false ‘facts’ and petty shame could ruin many a top reputation. Banal half truth rumours stylised and shared into headline hitting scandals. The rumour mill provocateur were on-line published tip sheets, ‘hot’ journals accessed only by strict subscription and picked up by tabloid journalists. This tip sheet information is first shared and pot boiled by a succession of clandestine corporate professional insiders. Information men - politicians, journalists, public officials et al, who all meet in secret and share rumoured titbits about top politicians, corporate CEOs and successful entertainers, with lurid information about them known as ‘blinders’ hitting the tip sheets to get the bad boy tabloid juice rolling. The corporate status of financial respect seeming to validate such ambiguous talk sharing. From such on-line tip sheets Mi-jin’s supposed sexual relations with a corporate politician was exposed to tabloids, leading to her death.

But as Woo-gon attempts to falsely subscribe to a tabloid distributor named Park (Jin-young Jung) via a car contact and relating to Mi-jin’s scandal , Woo-gon’s cover is blown and so he chases his contract to Park’s headquarters. There hot-headed Woo-gon threatens Park and his staff for info over Mi-jin’s scandal with a baseball bat piercing his contact in the leg with a broken batten, but learns from Park (after cooling down) that he’s battering the wrong info boys and should find his truth from the ‘head’, a darker world of corporate intrigue and political secrets.

Title: Casualties from Stylised Rumour (B) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Park was once an investigative journalist who also pursued corporate corruption, but after being brutally maimed by a nerve breakage in his leg for getting too close to the truth, fell into ‘safer’ territory as a tabloid distributor. With Woo-gon facing increasing danger by pursing violently higher corporate and political players relating to Mi-jin’s scandal, Woo-gon soon gets dragged into the black security van of finger breaker Cha (Seong-woong Park), an ice cold professional hire for one corporate giant Woo-gon begins to tread toes on and getting his fingers broken regularly by cold Mr Cha. Seeing the blooded and broken Woo-gon, Park decides to return to his more dangerous high risk, life threatening investigations and facilitate Woo-gon’s cause.

To obtain true evidence about Min-jin’s false sex scandal Park uses the aid of Baek Moon (Chang-seok Ko) an illegal wire tapper and camera tech wizard, who spies on ex-lovers as much as paying investigation, and both Park and Baek Moon thrust into the manic and unstoppable determination of Woo-gon’s demand for truth and justice at the top level. But as Woo-gon purses deeper into the corporate corrupt rabbit hole, discovering an illicit business stratagem for a Dream City that led Mi-jin into a pawn game that took her life, the risks are high for Woo-gon. Park warns him that all their lives would be in danger if big corporation’s dodgy deals are exposed. But Woo-gon feeling he had already died the day he discovered Mi-jin’s dead body at the apartment, knows only the truth will settle his soul.

Right, for one this is a really good thriller/intrigue movie. Mainly it’s very much the dark thriller movie than social comment about suicide; Woo-gon as an entertainment manager morphing into a Bourne type. But ‘Tabloid Truth’ does allow food for thought on how mass attitude needs to change about scandals written about people in tabloid news, print or on-line, which may not be what it seems. Like Morpheus words to Neo ‘How do you define real?’ Or Truth? And, that’s certainly the case with scandalous news headlines, some ‘real’ news that can aggravate the stress levels of good working S Korean actors to suicide (and depress many others). It’s understanding how to react to that ‘news real’, whether false or true...and for me to be absolutely positive about it. Scandals are only allowed to fester if mass people allow them crass credence above human values. Everyone makes life errors. This edition Region ALL
