Yamada Yusuke's popular novel Real Onigokko, which has already inspired five films and a TV series, gets another new and more extreme spin in 2015 in the hands of Sono Sion. The original story of Real Onigokko is set in an alternate world in which individuals with the surname Sato are targeted in a deadly game of tag. In Sono Sion's Tag, the targets are high school girls.

Featuring special effects makeup from Nishimura Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police), Tag follows heroine Mitsuko, who changes names and actresses as she enters different deadly scenarios. After witnessing the mysterious massacre of a busload of girls, she escapes as the lone survivor and runs off to an all-girls high school, but everywhere she goes, more bloodbaths and questions await. Triendl Reina (Ju-on: The Beginning of the End), former AKB48 member Shinoda Mariko and Mano Erina (The Next Generation Patlabor) star in this trippy, gory action fantasy.

En route to a school field trip, two buses filled with high school girls are destroyed by an invisible force. The sole survivor of the bloody attack, Mitsuko (Reina Triendl) must now fight for her survival as the mysterious murderers constantly invent new ways to eliminate any high school girl they can find. Directed by Sono Sion, TAG is a violent and nightmarish survival thriller with a strong pro-feminist message. Those two things may not seem like an ideal mix, but Sono Sion fans know that anything is possible from the bad boy of Japanese cinema.
