YesAsia Editorial Description

Hong Kong's controversial, award-winning 2015 anthology film Ten Years, which imagined life in the city ten years later, has inspired spin-offs in Taiwan, Thailand and Japan that offer local takes on the future. Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives), Wisit Sasanatieng (Citizen Dog), Aditya Assarat (Hi-So) and Chulayarnon Siriphol (Vanishing Horizon of the Sea), Ten Years Thailand presents a dystopian outlook that reflects on the uneasy sociopolitical state of Thailand, which has been under military rule since a coup in 2014.

In Aditya Assarat's B&W "Sunset," the army exercises censorship on photos at an art gallery that may sow conflict. Wisit Sasanatieng's "Catopia" envisions an absurdist alternative world in which cats rule and one lone young human struggles to blend in for survival. In Chulayarnon Siriphol's "Planetarium," a pink-clad ruler observes and controls people through a far-reaching surveillance system while a youth guard identifies dissidents for indoctrination. Apichatpong Weerasathikul’s “Song of the City” observes the normal comings and goings of people in Ratchadanussorn park in Khon Kaen, with the camera constantly returning to a statue of Sarit Thanarat, the late general who staged a coup in 1957 to become prime minister.
