YesAsia Editorial Description

Singer, songwriter, composer, producer, arranger, instrument player, dreamer, doer... all of these labels apply to Yen-j, an all-round musician who has just embarked on his road to prominence. It all started when the boy wonder learned to play the piano at the age of 10, and from then on he was determined to devote his future to jazz music, which inspired him to name himself "Yen-j". In summer 2008, the 20-year-old, Los Angeles-born Yen-j sent his demo tape to record labels in Taiwan. It caught the eyes, or shall we say ears, of B'in Music executives, thus began his adventure in Mando-pop. Yen-j was commissioned to produce the score for SETTV's top-rated idol dramas My Queen and Autumn's Concerto. Now Yen-j is ready to display his versatility in his debut album consisting of 11 self-written songs that blend together rock, jazz, hip-hop, folk, and other popular musical elements. The album's main plugs include "Love is Curry" and the titular track Thanks Your Greatness.

A fresh new voice for every genre
It's becoming increasingly hard to find anything refreshing in the music of new Chinese singer-songwriters these days. Many of them specialize in R&B-rap-dance songs, aspiring to be the next Jay Chou or Leehom Wang, while others go on stage with just their guitars and want to be the next Crowd Lu. However, 22-year-old Yen-J is a little different from other aspiring singer-songwriters out there because he doesn't just aspire to excel in one particular musical genre - he's out to master all of them.

Before the release of his debut album Thanks Your Greatness, Yen-J started out as a composer for drama series like My Queen and Autumn's Concerto. That's why it's no surprise that Thanks Your Greatness moves effortlessly between genres ranging from jazz to rock. Opening track Searching already combines the two with a bouncy arrangement reminiscent of a more cheerful Vanessa Carlton. Working as composer, lyricist, arranger, and programmer, Yen-J seems to be in total control of his music, even throwing in a set of strings in Searching for good measure.

Yen-J's strength is in combining the musical aesthetics of one genre with compositions of other genres. This talent is most apparent in songs like The Chronicle of a Summer Romance (Track 9), where he takes the composition of a sweet, relaxing ballad and gives it an arrangement that blends folk rock, bossa nova, and R&B in a light mix. Even though his composition skill is still lacking a bit at points, his versatility as a musician more than makes up for it.

The song that should capture the most attention is likely to be the silly-titled Love is Curry (Track 4). Sampling from the classic jazz song Take the A-Train and blending it with his own lounge-style composition, Love is Curry is a sweet, funky, and constantly engaging bebop jazz song that's easily the most memorable track of the album. It should attract as much critical acclaim for its consistently inventive nature as the early works of Jay Chou and David Tao.

However, when Yen-J sticks to genre borders, he plays things a little too safe. This applies the most to his rock songs, in which he shows too much of his inspirations without making them unique in the context of the album. It Needs Some Time to Settle starts off too much like a John Mayer song before simply turning into another mid-tempo, guitar-driven rock song. Meanwhile, the hip-hop song Lifesaver (featuring Magic Power, Ding Dang, and Spaceman on vocals) not only proves that Yen-J doesn't make a very good rapper, it also suggests that he might be the biggest fan of his own music.

When it comes to genre music, Yen-J is much more comfortable sticking to R&B and jazz. i Didn't Give Enough blends a 70s soul flavor into a R&B ballad in Yen-J's tribute to Stevie Wonder; it's a breezy, soulful song that Khalil Fong would've written early in his career. The closing track, My Love 438, which Yen-J produced from a jamming session with his old University of Southern California friends, again shows how comfortable he is in the jazz genre, giving the album a brilliant conclusion.

Yen-J is perhaps closest in musical style to David Tao, who chose R&B as his genre of choice while also branching out to other musical genres at the same time. While Yen-J hasn't reached Tao's level just yet, he does have a similar amount of musical ambition. Is Thanks Your Greatness an all-out effort that has emptied Yen-J of his best works, or is it just the beginning of a great musical career? I look forward to finding out the answer over the next few years.
