YesAsia Editorial Description

Funny, romantic, and completely charming, MBC drama The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince features heartthrobs Gong Yoo (One Fine Day) and Lee Seon Gyun (The Great White Tower) and sassy starlet Yoon Eun Hye (Palace) at their best. Gong Yoo stars as Han Kyul, an aloof, hot-tempered young man who can't figure out what he wants to do in life, but he knows he's not interested in the family business or all these blind dates his grandmother keeps arranging. At his grandmother's prodding, he begins to run a coffee shop and, mistaking the boyish-looking Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye) for a guy, he hires her to work at the cafe...and pose as his boyfriend! It was just a ploy to scare off the blind dates, but the confused Han Kyul begins to fall for Eun Chan. A big audience hit in South Korea, The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince is both a romantic comedy of errors and a sensitive urban drama about the dreams and confusions of modern young people.

The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince OST is a delightful mix of sounds and sentiments, ranging from electronic to mainstream K-pop. Newcomer group The Melody leaves a deep impression with their two songs, "Lalala, It's Love!" (Track 1) and Polly (Track 10), while As One offers the romantic White Love Story (Track 2). For some electropop, there's Humming Urban Stereo's "How About a Cup of Coffee?" (Track 3) and Casker's Mocha and Double Shot (Track 13). Rounding out the selections is indie guitar pop act Tearliner with Go Go Chan!! (Track 4) and "Ocean Trip" (Track 12). "Ocean Trip" is Choi Han Sung's theme in the drama, and Lee Seon Gyun himself sings a softer version (Track 8) of the song, also included in this soundtrack.

Coffee Shop Pop
I would typically hesitate to recommend a drama soundtrack since liking the soundtrack is often dependent on liking the drama, and Korean dramas just aren't for everyone. But The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince OST is really one of the best OSTs I've heard and a great choice for music fans. In a rather inspired personnel move, the music director for the soundtrack is Park Sung Hoon, better known as Liner from indie act Tearliner. He has put together a refreshing selection of indie pop and instrumentals that go perfectly with the coffee shop mood.

Tearliner's excitedly titled Go Go Chan!! (Track 4) is a fast-paced, mellow, feel good indie pop number featuring Yo Cho's soft and soothing vocals. The sweet singing and bouncy atmosphere are underlined by Liner's assured guitar. When it comes to K-drama soundtracks, it's easy to think of the instrumentals as just pleasant filler, but here they're definitely part of the highlight thanks to Liner's great composition and arrangement. The soft guitar and piano instrumental "Overflowing Coffee Fragrance" (Track 5), moody guitar piece "One Piece of Sunlight" (Track 9), headbopping guitar and drum set "Sweet" (Track 11), and incredibly happy fusion of piano and electropop that is "Good Memory" (Track 14) are all great tracks to listen to.

To actually hear Liner's voice, the only option is the floatingly mellow and earpleasing "Ocean Travel" (Track 12). This song comes in two other forms, a piano version (Track 15) and a Choi Han Sung version (Track 8) sung by lead actor Lee Seon Gyun. After his breakout role in The Great White Tower, Lee Seon Gyun has gotten something of a reputation for "the voice", a distinct and deep baritone. Considering his speaking voice has managed to acquire so many fans, one can't help being curious what it would sound like singing, and the answer is revealed in this soundtrack. Lee has decent enough vocals, but not much method. His signature voice stands out too strongly against the soft melody, but in terms of a novelty track, it's quite listenable.

After Tearliner, the stars of this soundtrack would have to be newcomer singer-songwriter trio The Melody. Their cheerful, up-tempo theme song, "Lalala, It's Love" (Track 1), has a superb arrangement and a catchy 80s sensibility to it. Even better though is Polly (Track 10), a whimsically sweet and harmonic ballad with a fairy tale-like mood. This is the first I've heard from The Melody, but I'll definitely be looking out for their work in the future.

The soundtrack's remaining selections are wonderfully varied. For some soft, jazzy, and atmospheric electropop, there's Humming Urban Stereo's "How About a Cup of Coffee?" (Track 3) and Casker's Mocha (Track 7). If all K-drama soundtracks must have a touching ballad, then the simple and stirring White Love Story (Track 2) from the underappreciated As One is a great choice.

So good Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've been trying to find this OST everywhere, but only found it here since its an old drama ( a good 8 years ago)

It's shaped like any other western CD and there's not much of a photobook but the music is great. Makes me feel like watching the drama all over again :)

Bought the 2nd OST of Coffee Prince coz the first OST is fantastic!
The songs really bring u back to the show itself.
Especially the 2nd Track "White Love Story",it reminds me of Han Keol and Eun Chan's first hug encounter in the Coffee Prince. What a touching scene.
The OST is PERFECT for the show and if u love the show, this is a must get!

Not forgetting the 2nd OST too!

This customer review refers to The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince Original Soundtrack (OST) (CD+DVD) (Taiwan Collectible Edition)
Memorable.... Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Purchase this album recently...

It is a no-regret in purchasing this album, because it features some NG takes of the show and the interviews of En Chan and Han Jie... But a bit of disappointment in the DVD.

Reason: Only show a bit of the NG takes of the show. Actually i did expect more NG takes and the ceremonies they had after the last shot of that drama... Ang perhaps interviews of the rest of the prince in the show like Ha Lin, Huang Min Ye and the other prince (forgotten his name in the show)... O and the cute grandma in the show... although she is only a small role in the show but she brings up the childish and the charm of Han Jie as a son and a man in the show.

Songs in it, never disappointment me but i do also expect more MV about the music in the Drama, rather than having 2 of them only.

Last Verdict: THUMBS UP... still got room for improvement... BUT overall still LOVE IT...

You are wrong mr sanwei Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the best Korean Drama OST you'll ever pick up. If you like the series (and I bet you do or else you wont be reading this review right now), I seriously recommend you pick up this cd. It is a a real jem in a crop of manufactured osts... nice sounds, very light and relaxing and it transports you back to the special moments in the drama.
Mr Sanwei, you are wrong. Korean drama is for everyone! and the music the comes with it is like cherry on the top of my sundae!

Coffee Prince OST Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a wonderful soundtrack, a bit different from most soundtracks of other Korean dramas I've heard of. The music is calming, and I think nice to listen to on a sunny day. Track 1, The Melody's "Lalala, it's love" and Track 4, Tearliner's "Go Go Chan" is highly recommended!
