YesAsia Editorial Description

A wannabe detective and an irate cop team up to solve a murder case in the comedic crime mystery The Accidental Detective starring Kwon Sang Woo and veteran funnyman Sung Dong Il. Director Kim Jung Hoon, who previously helmed the refreshing hit romantic comedy Petty Romance, keeps the audience engaged with both cheeky humor and whodunnit twists and turns.

Besides working and taking care of his baby, mystery novel enthusiast Kang Dae Man (Kwon Sang Woo) runs a blog on cold cases and likes to offer his unwelcome opinions at the local police station, much to the consternation of veteran detective No Tae Soo (Sung Dong Il). When Dae Man's friend (Park Hae Joon) gets arrested for murder, he sets out to clear his friend's name by inserting himself into the investigation. Forming an unlikely duo with Tae Soo, they work together – amid much grumbling – to get to the bottom of the case.

Professional Review of "The Accidental Detective (2015) (DVD) (Taiwan Version)"

March 29, 2016

This professional review refers to The Accidental Detective (DVD) (Korea Version)
Writer director Kim Hung-hoon, who achieved the difficult feat of spicing up the Korean romantic comedy genre in 2010 with Petty Romance, now turns his attention to a mismatched couple of a different sort in The Accidental Detective. A comical cop mystery, the film is headlined by Kwon Sang-woo (Chinese Zodiac) and Sung Dong-il (Revival) as an obsessive civilian and a grouchy veteran detective, who team up to try and get to the bottom of a potentially connected series of brutal murders.

Kwon plays Kang Dae Man, a henpecked husband who runs a bookshop and looks after his baby, kept in check by his bossy wife Mi Ok (Seo Young-hee, Madonna) and finding escape through his blog on unsolved criminal cases. Well-known at the local police station for his unwanted attempts to get involved, he finds himself at the centre of a major investigation when his friend and detective Joon Soo (Park Hae-joon, Hwayi: A Monster Boy) is arrested for murder. Desperate to prove his innocence, Dae Man starts tagging along with detective No Tae Soo (Sung Dong-il), much to the consternation of the grizzled cop.

Petty Romance worked and surprised mainly thanks to a strong sense of character and its offbeat story, and Kim Hung-hoon, who again scripts, shows a similar approach with The Accidental Detective. Marrying suspense, police procedural and laughter is by no means an easy balancing act, though he manages to pull it off, and the film is funny and daft while at the same time offering up a solid central mystery. Although the final twist and revelation is one that's been done before, it's nevertheless well-handled, and Kim succeeds in keeping the viewer guessing without being too manipulative. With a few action scenes sprinkled throughout, along with some suitably violent and bloody murders, the film is tense and dramatic, if perhaps a little overlong at two hours – a bit of trimming during the middle section would arguably have helped.

Crucially, Kwon Sang-woo and Sung Dong-il make for a great lead pairing, and the banter and chemistry between them helps gloss over the film's basic familiarity. Both actors are on top form, and Kim's script does a great job of slowly building their relationship from their early bickering and dislike of each other, through to their inevitable bonding – Kim even manages a couple of genuinely touching moments with the men discovering things they have in common. This anchors the film nicely, proving again that more films really should have extra effort put into their screenwriting, as having protagonists that the viewer likes and cares about adds a definite punch to its scenes of peril – a seemingly obvious lesson that far too many productions ignore. The rest of the cast are also good value, even Seo Young-hee's nagging wife having a bit more depth than usual, and the relationship between her and Dae Man is an interesting and believable one.

As with Petty Romance, Kim Hung-hoon has here again managed to freshen up a tried and tested genre, working within its traditions while adding something at least a little new. While not outstanding, The Accidental Detective is a very enjoyable second outing for Kim, and thanks in no small part to its engaging leads makes for a couple of hours of suspenseful fun.
