Will keep you on the edge of your seat Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
In "The Adulteress" a young orphan girl falls in love with a young scholar, but is married to a poor tofu maker who will provide her a hard but stable life. The local magistrate's son covets the poor woman and drugs her so he can have his way with her. One evil deed leads to another and soon we find the tofu maker poisoned to death and his unfortunate wife and the young scholar unjustly charged for the crime. More than half of the film's length is played out in a series of courtroom scenes, as the plot gets increasingly complex.

I couldn't look away from this riveting and suspenseful huangmei opera. The film takes many unexpected but completely logical twists and turns on its way to an entirely satisfactory conclusion. With most huangmei films, the viewer has a pretty good idea of where the story is going to end up; that's never true of "The Adulteress" -- it provides surprise after surprise.

Li Lihua gives a nice performance as the tortured young woman, Kwan Shan is great as the unjustly accused scholar, but the best performance of all may come from veteran actor Yeung Chi-Hing, as the corrupt magistrate who frames them in order to cover for his son. With solid acting and a gripping story, "The Adulteress" must rank among the all-time greats of the huangmei genre.

Captivating plot Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I thoroughly enjoyed this remake version of Xiao Bai Cai. Li Lihua is just as beautiful here as she was in the earlier version of the '50s. I have nothing but praise for the way she portrayed her character in this movie. The veterans cast and the twist and turn of the gripping plot all helped to make this an enchanting drama to watch.
