Known for depicting the lives of those struggling in society, writer-director Ishii Yuya shifts settings to South Korea in his 2021 film The Asian Angel starring Ikematsu Sosuke, Odagiri Joe, and Korean actors Choi Hee Seo, Kim Min Jae and Kim Ye Eun. Filled with amusing conversations and good-natured humor, the unexpected family drama brings out the trials and tenacity of modern life.

Widowed novelist Aoki Takeshi (Ikematsu Sosuke) has an estranged older brother, Toru (Odagiri Joe), who lives in South Korea. He heads to Seoul with his 8-year-old son (Sato Ryo), only to find that his free-spirited brother isn't doing so great himself. Despite not being able to speak Korean, Takeshi has to help with Toru's sketchy work importing and selling cosmetics. Former idol Choi Seol (Choi Hee Seo) is no longer able to sing her own songs, but in order to support her brother (Kim Min Jae) and sister (Kim Ye Eun), she must continue on somehow. When these two families at rock bottom cross paths, they embark on an unexpected journey together.
