Director: Chang Cheh

In the same year director/writer Chang Cheh and star Jimmy Wang Yu revolutionized Hong Kong kung-fu cinema with One-Armed Swordsman, they also collaborated on this epic of the Six Kingdoms era. Here, Yu is a two-armed swordsman who is betrayed by a jealous rival, but initially seeks a life of simple pleasures until an accidental meeting with another patriot sets him back on the road to bloody, brutal vengeance.

Not your typical Chang Cheh flick Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
With "The Assassin", I was expecting to find yet another Chang Cheh actioner filled with male bonding and heroic bloodshed. While there naturally is some of that, this turns out to be quite a different kind of movie. "The Assassin" might best be characterized as a kind of dramatic character study, revealing the events which shape the kind of person who is willing to give up his life in the pursuit of a noble cause. The story is loosely based upon one of the episode's described in Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian", with the events taking place during China's Warring States period.

The evil Han state is threatening to overwhelm its neighbors. Wang Yu plays a young man who secretly joins a martial arts school that is training young men to fight against the Hans. Wang Yu and the daughter (Chiao Chiao) of the martial arts master have been sweethearts since childhood, but another student at the school -- a rich nobleman's son -- seeks to have Chiao Chiao for himself. When she refuses his advances, his disappointment leads to treachery, which leads to the murder of the martial arts master and consequences which underlie the rest of the film's action. After the attack on his martial arts school and the murder of his master, Wang Yu and his family flee, with Wang Yu ending up as a very unhappy butcher, tethered to his job by his sense of filial duty to his mother, but yearning for bigger things. When the wealthy Yen finds him and calls on him for a fateful mission against the Hans, Wang Yu is ready to embrace the challenge.

This remastered version of the movie looks and sounds absolutely spectacular. I suspect that the film's striking incidental music is newly recorded; it doesn't sound like film music typical of the era when this movie was made. Chang Cheh employs interesting cinematic techniques and allows the film to unfold at a deliberate pace that may seem slow to action movie fans, but allows for a richer character development than we typically associate with Chang's films. Chiao Chiao is a standout in her romantic role. This is not your typical Chang Cheh fightfest; for the most part, its action scenes appear only at the beginning and end of the film. However, I loved the rich atmosphere, the strong characters, and the powerful themes of this engrossing Shaw Brothers classic.

Assassin Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This acclaimed Chang Cheh's classics is quite draggy as compared to his other classics like the One Armed Swordsman. However, it has its historical value. Jimmy Wang Yu's role as usual is heroic and this time he fought to death in the end. Quite worthy watching for Jimmy's fans.
