A young man is determined to not inherit his father's sins in The Backwater, the new film from acclaimed Japanese auteur Aoyama Shinji (Eureka). Based on the Akutagawa Prize-winning novel by Tanaka Shinya, the erotic drama follows the journey of 17-year-old Toma (Suda Masaki), living in a Yamaguchi Prefecture port town in 1988. After discovering his chauvinistic father's violent sexual tendency, Toma begins to worry that he, too, will inherit his father's primitive habits. Featuring complex female characters – including Tanaka Yuko as Toma's mother and Shinohara Yukiko as the lover of Toma's father – and a provoking story that asks whether our fates are predetermined in our bloods.

[ストーリー]
昭和６３年の夏、山口県下関市。１７歳の遠馬は、父親とその愛人と暮らしている。普段は明るい父だが、彼にはセックスの時に女を殴る暴力的な性癖があった。戦争で左手を失った遠馬の実母は、そんな夫に愛想を尽かし、遠馬を産んですぐに家を出て魚屋を営んでいる。日常的に父の乱暴な性交場面を目の当たりにし、嫌悪感を募らせていく遠馬。幼なじみの彼女・千種と何度も交わるうちに、思わず千種の首を絞めてしまい気づいてしまう。　自分にも確かに父と同じ、忌まわしい血が流れていることを—。
