YesAsia Editorial Description

Japanese New Wave director Imamura Shohei's eighties classic The Ballad of Narayama reveals the lives of poor rural families in the mountains. Based on the Narayama Bushiko by Fukazawa Shichiro, the hardy, introspective and at times cruel account of life and death won the Palme d'Or at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival and Best Picture at the Japan Academy Prize.

In a poor mountain village, there is a tradition that those who reach the age of 70 will leave the village, travel to the mountaintop, and wait for death. This practice of ubasute reduces the burden on the family over the long winter when food is scarce. Orin (Sakamoto Sumiko) is 69 years old and still in good health, but she is determined to make the trip when her time comes. Before her departure for the mountains, she bustles about tirelessly for the sake of her sons up until the very last moment.

Beautiful, brutal folk tale Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"The Ballad of Narayama" is a primal, earthy tale of a family's elderly matriarch putting her house in order before it is her time to climb Mount Nara and depart this world. Director Imamura Shohei effectively combines spectacular cinematography of a gorgeous landscape with this sometimes brutal story of a primitive people.

The performances by Director Imamura's typical stable of actors are superb. The actors, particularly Ogata Ken, must have put up with some real physical hardships in the production of this film.

What gives this remarkable film its resonance is the recognition of the similarities between the actions of these crude and violent people and the more sophisticated behaviors we find in our own lives. "The Ballad of Narayama" is a great film and I recommend it highly for a mature audience.
