YesAsia Editorial Description

Released in 1971 after the success of The Chinese Boxer and The One Armed Boxer, The Brave and the Evil is another kung fu classic from Jimmy Wang Yu's post-Shaw Brothers days. Written and directed by Wang Yu himself, the film sees the action legend doing what he does best - doling out poetic justice old-school style with hard-hitting action scenes and inventive martial arts sequences. Wang stars as the charismatic martial arts master Iron Palm who crosses paths on the road with angry swordswoman Hung (Shang-Kuan Ling Feng, Dragon Inn). She's out to get revenge for her father who was killed by a band of ruthless bandits (Paul Chang Chun, Kenneth Tsang, Sit Hon, and Man Chung San). After their fateful encounter, Iron Palm decides to covertly assist Hung in her quest.

Jimmy Wang Yu writes, directs, and stars Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The Jimmy Wang Yu-scripted and -directed "The Brave and the Evil" clearly is structured in three acts. In Act I, a security company hauling a great treasure trove is ambushed by a band of thieves. The action plays out as a set piece like those we've seen in dozens of similar films. We end up with the inevitable showdown between the brutal leader of the bandits and the elderly leader of the security company, both martial arts masters.

In Act II, beauteous but hot-headed Hung (Polly Shang Kuan), the daughter of the security company leader, comes to seek revenge against the murdering thieves. Iron Palm Pai (Wang Yu), a wandering martial arts student, takes an interest in Hung's plight and helps her plan an assault against the bad guys. Hung, however, becomes impatient and foolishly seeks to gain vengeance on her own. In Act III, Iron Palm Pai comes to rescue Hung -- now a classic damsel in distress -- from the evil bandits, culminating in a great battle between Pai and the bandit chief (Chang Chun).

The production values, action choreography, and cinematography are workmanlike, but definitely a step down from Shaw Brothers quality. Surprisingly, Iron Palm Pai makes little use of his famed Iron Palm technique in his climactic battle. And Polly Shang Kuan's Hung seems to lose just about every fight she enters. (Don't miss the film "Backalley Princess" to see Polly really kick butt and take names.) Surprisingly, Act II, which relies much more on drama and intrigue than action, is by far the most compelling part of the movie. Act I is standard-issue chop-socky; Act III overstays its welcome. But Act II really draws the viewer in with its development of the central characters. Overall, "The Brave and the Evil" is rather pedestrian, but worth a look for fans of the genre.
