Fujii Michihito, whose The Journalist won Best Film at the 43rd Japan Academy Prize, directs The Brightest Roof in the Universe based on a novel by Nonaka Tomoso. Up-and-coming teen actress Kiyohara Kaya, who also appeared in Fujii's Day and Night, stars in this fanciful and aesthetic youth story alongside Momoi Kaori, Ito Kentaro, Yoshioka Hideaka and Sakai Maki.

14-year-old girl Tsubame (Kiyohara Kaya) has a crush on college student Toru (Ito Kentaro) who lives nearby, but she can't voice her feelings. Though she lives in a warm and loving environment with her father (Yoshioka Hidetaka) and stepmother (Sakai Maki), she begins to feel hurt and alienated when she learns her parents are happily expecting a new child. What's more, things aren't going well at school either. Tsubame likes to spend time alone on the rooftop of her calligraphy classroom where she can look at the stars. One night, a flashily dressed old woman (Momoi Kaori) riding a kick scooter appears before her on the rooftop.
