YesAsia Editorial Description

Butterfly Chalice paved the way for China's renowned director Chang Cheh in 1963. Prior to that for the script adaptation of the Shaw Brothers' movies he co-directed this film with Yuan Chiu Feng. Starring such artists as Ting Hung, Chin Feng, and Luo Lie, the story revolves around Tian Yu Quan (Chin Feng) who rushes to the aid of an elderly fisherman who is bullied by an arrogant relative of the Qiu Shan ministry. In the heat of the ensuing battle he kills the said man and is hence chased by the district's officials. Trying to use the waterway to shake off his enemies, Yu Quan finds a true friend in the old fisherman's bark-stearing daughter, Hu Feng Lian (Ting Hung) who becomes his loyal accomplice. As symbol for his gratitude, Yu Quan bestows Feng Lian with a Butterfly Chalice to reflect their eternal friendship bond...

Chang Cheh does huangmei opera! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I'm a pushover when it comes to huangmei opera films and "The Butterfly Chalice", co-directed by Chang Cheh, is no exception. Chin Feng stars as Tian Yu Quan, the gallant son of a local magistrate. He chances upon a group of bullies beating to death an elderly fisherman (Tien Feng). Yu Quan intervenes and scuffles with one of the bullies. The thug stumbles, falls, and hits his head on the edge of a stone step, resulting in his death. Unfortunately for Yu Quan, the dead thug turns out to be the son of the region's governor general Lu Lin (Cheng Miu). Yu Quan must flee for his life.

Governor General Lu beckons Yu Quan's father, Magistrate Tian Yun Shan (Lee Ying), and demands that the magistrate capture his son, convict him, and arrange for his execution. The magistrate stands up for the rule of law, but his duty is clear: he must find his son and put him on trial. Yu Quan, on the lam, hides on the dead fisherman's boat, which now is helmed by the fisherman's lovely daughter Feng Lien (Pat Ting Hung). Naturally, romance blooms between the young man who sought to save the fisherman and the fisherman's grieving daughter.

Bolstered by the Shaw Brothers' usual superb production values, a talented cast, and engaging huangmei music, "The Butterfly Chalice" never fails to entertain. Surprisingly, the legal and political elements of the story prove to be particularly intriguing. The plot is unusually complex and the film's resolution takes twists and turns that put in doubt the ending which had seemed inevitable. Ingenious! Highly recommended.
