YesAsia Editorial Description

Of the Shaw Brothers Venoms, Wai Pak never quite reached the fame and popularity of his fellow brethen despite being the best looking of the lot. After a brief Shaw Bros. career most notable for Five Deadly Venoms, he jumped to upstart Golden Harvest in 1979. Wai took supporting roles in kung fu classics like Sammo Hung's Magnificent Butcher and Prodigal Son, as well as Jackie Chan's The Young Master. Proper leading man status for Wai would come in the 1980 kung fu flick The Cheeky Chap and the 1981 supernatural thriller The Phantom Killer. Directed by Lee Wing Cheung, The Cheeky Chap is a rare release that sees Wai Pak taking on a Jackie Chan-style kung fu comedy.

The young and carefree Ma (Wai Pak) is an accomplished martial artist who never looks away when he sees crime and injustice. His pesky habit brings him into dispute with local gangster Au from whom he rescues Ko. Ma also lends a helping hand to Phoenix (Man Suet Yee) and her debt-ridden father, but Phoenix's father eventually dies in the hands of his debtors, the notorious Sha brothers. Incensed by Ma's constant interference, Au and the Sha brothers decide to team up, laying a trap to take him out.

Ma Son-yeh is young, handsome and playful boy but he is also a top expert in martial arts. Ma is disliked intensely by bad man Au, because Ma rescued Kao from Au's gangs and later on turned down Au's peaceful offer. Ma also has earned the enmity of the loan shark Sha brothers by meddling in the brother's business. The brothers lend money to local beauty Golden Phoenix's father but then send a thief to steal it. Ma gets back the money for the girl. Ma and Golden Phoenix fall in love to each other. After that, the girl's father is beaten up by the Sha brothers and the girl is imprisoned. Ma rescues both of them, but the old man dies eventually. The Shas and Au set up a trap for Ma and Kao. They first catch Ma in an ambush. When Ma insists he needs only 10 days of freedom to attend to his dying mother's last nights, the Shas agree only after Kao guarantees Ma's return in exchange of his life. But Ma is captured by Sha's men at the moment while he arrives home. The deadline is past. Kao kills himself. Golden Phoenix helps Ma to escape. An angry Ma comes to settle the accounts with the Shas and Au. He wins only after a series of fierce fights. Ma falls into the tender embrace of Golden Phoenix.

See this movie!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I swear to God... if Jackie Chan had starred in this, it be known world-wide! But it doesn't. It stars Wei Pei (from Jackies Young Master) and is one of the best kung fu comedies ever made! Period! I really shouldn't have to say anymore, except that its a shame not more kung fu fans know about this - Don't be left behind!! Stunning choreography and brilliant comedy make this (yet another) under-rated classic!!!
