YesAsia Editorial Description
Tsui Hark directs The Chinese Feast, a hit Lunar New Year Comedy that's a fast-paced, food-filled delight! Leslie Cheung stars as Chiu, a ladykiller triad boy and aspiring chef who's drawn into a winner-takes-all cooking contest. When his boss Au Siu Fung (Law Kar Ying) is challenged by a Mainland master chef (Xiong Xin Xin), Siu Fung accepts, and then promptly suffers a stroke! It falls upon Chiu and Siu Fung's daughter Ka Wai (the delightful Anita Yuen) to get the job done, but neither is good enough to complete the Qing Han Feast, a legendary collection of dishes featuring such exotic ingredients as elephant trunk, bear paw, and even monkey brains! There is one chef who can get the job done: former Master Chef Kit (Kenny Bee), but he's now a drunken loser who stocks groceries in a Guangzhou convenience store. Can Chiu and Ka Wai restore Kit to his former cooking genius in time to save their restaurant? Director Tsui Hark brings tremendous energy and screwball panache to the table, but he's upstaged by the fabulous assortment of foods which are guaranteed to whet your appetite! With amazing cooking sequences and winning star performances, The Chinese Feast is one delicious and wildly entertaining Hong Kong hit!

One of my favorite movies of all times. I literally watch this movie once a year for the past 15years.
the comedy is great and the food looks extremely delicious. I wish some of the dishes could truly be made the way they show so I could eat it in real life. although I think some of the dishes can truly be craft the way they show but would require a lot of work. A short intro between 2 top chefs display their rice cooking skills, carving skills(ice carving was amazing but the tofu carved into statues!), and cooking fish. The competition has an unexpected result due to a personal matter with one of the chefs and ends in a drama like scene. Forwarding in time. Chiu(leslie) wanting to change his gangster life and find his girlfriend in another country by becoming a chef. One of the top chef by chance meets meets Chiu and refers him to a restaurant. Little does chiu knows that he has enter enemy territory. Check this movie out to see whether both top chefs will meet again and how the outcome of this silly but delicious story end. Regarding this Blu-ray remastered edition. The English subs are decent, but doesn't translate well when it comes to the jokes which takes out a lot of laughter during some scenes. (spoiler alert) during a early scene when chiu(leslie) and wai(anita) are talking to each other during a scene about she can speak French. she says VV(oui, oui meaning yes), leslie says you mean VV wet wet(meaning to go play in cantonese slang), the dad(law kar ying) jumps in and says V.V. catch the finish in the english subs( but he actually say V.V. help find the fish asshole in cantonese) it makes a huge difference for the jokes in how things are interpreted to match their voice and tones. There are also other scenes that are badly translated to what they are actually saying but this is nonetheless a great movie that I love. Extra footage as I mentioned . in this edition there is a scene that I've seen only for the first time out of the 15-20 years since I owned the original DVD. This remastered Blu-ray adds in a fight scene that does not appear in the dvd. although the scene may not be necessary but it was a bit surprising to see. |
