When it comes to glossy commercial films that hit you in the feels and the funny bone, it's hard to go wrong with GDH. The 2020 comedy The Con-Heartist deploys the blockbuster studio's tried-and-true formula of pretty people engaging in cute romance and wacky comedy, but this crowd-pleaser leads with crime caper elements.
Romcom favorite Baifern Pimchanok gives one of her most lovable performances as Ina, a humble banker who wears her heart on her sleeve. That's how she ended up getting scammed by ex-boyfriend Petch (a wily, smiley Thiti Mahayotaruk) and saddled with debt. When she encounters suave con artist Tower, played by Channel 3 heartthrob Nadech Kugimiya, she ropes him into helping her get her money back from Petch. Mez Tharatorn, who directed the hit romcoms ATM and I Fine.. Thank You.. Love You.., knows the drill and keeps things cruising at a fun pace with palpable zeal. Most of The Con-Heartist's time and energy is dedicated to the con job, which involves recruiting partners-in-crime to pose as an older female CEO and a hotel sales executive, and then tricking Petch into paying a huge luxury hotel booking. The plan involves various twists, mishaps and last-minute complications for a steady stream of tense and comedic moments. Some of the humor is hit or miss - the joke involving ATM star Chantavit Dhanasevi's spitty character goes on far too long - but the film is the funniest when the characters are facing off in battles of wits. The romance part of The Con-Heartist is far subtler, and the film is all the better for it. The budding feelings between Ina and Tower are written and performed with admirable restraint and sincerity, serving as an undercurrent that gives the story heart and enables character development. With The Con-Heartist, GDH continues to demonstrate its assured finger on the pulse of Thai commercial cinema. The caper comedy enthusiastically delivers the big stars, easy laughs and slick production values for solid popcorn entertainment. |
