YesAsia Editorial Description

Ling Bo is yet another legendary actress under the Shaw Brothers. Born in 1939, she joined the Shaw Brothers Studio in 1962, and quickly rose to fame in 1963 with The Love Eterne, winning the Special Award For Outstanding Performance at the Golden Horse Film Awards. Like in The Love Eterne, Ling Bo takes up a male role in The Crimson Palm. Director Yan Jun also appears in the film as Judge Bao, a figure from well-known Chinese folk tales who uphold justice. Ling Bo is Lin, a young man engaged to the daughter of a rich man, who now despises Lin because of his family's declining status. Lin visits his beloved fiancee before he heads towards the imperial city to participate in the civil service examination, only to find her maid lying dead in blood. Lin is then accused of murder. How can Judge Bao prove his innocence?

The seminal Huangmei Opera adaptation from Shaw, The Crimson Palm features the unforgettable film song "Country Road" by Ivy Ling Po. The story evolves around Lin Shao-teh, a poor student who was engaged to Chien-king (Chin Ping), the daughter of billionaire Wang Chun (Yu Kuan-chao). To support her lover for the exam, Chien-king offered gold as Lin's traveling expenses and asked to meet him at midnight. When Lin arrived as scheduled, all he could find was the bloody corpse of Chien-king's maid (Li Ching)!

Ling Po, Judge Bao, and great huangmei music! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"The Crimson Palm" stars Ivy Ling Po as young scholar Lin Shao-Teh, whose family fortune went up in smoke with the burning of his family home. Now Lin is reduced to scaping out a meagre existence for himself and his loving mother. Lin remains engaged to the lovely Chien-King (Chin Ping), who loves Lin deeply. Chien-King's wealthy father, however, wants to separate the young lovers. He approved the engagement when Lin's family was rich, but now doesn't want his daughter to marry the impoverished Lin. Lin works hard to improve his lot in life and be able to provide a comfortable life for his future bride, but Chien-King's father has other plans. Those plans come to fruition when Lin innocently stumbles upon the murdered body of Chien-King's servant (Li Jing). Lin becomes blamed for the killing and Chien-King's father bribes the judge to ensure that Lin is convicted and beheaded. However, just when the axe is about to fall on the unfortunate Lin's neck, the legendary Judge Bao arrives. Can the resolute and righteous Judge Bao untangle the plot and save our hero?

As you would expect for a Shaw Brothers' huangmei opera, "The Crimson Palm" is beautifully staged and photographed, well-acted and -directed, and filled with great music. Ling Po gives another memorable performance and director Yan Jun is terrific as Judge Bao. You can't go wrong with this excellent movie!
