Continuing the trend of the fusion sageuk sensation Love in the Moonlight, the MBC drama The Emperor: Owner of the Mask (a.k.a. Ruler: Master of the Mask) revolves around the power struggle between a crown prince and a notorious shadow organization during the Joseon dynasty. Yoo Seung Ho (I Miss You) takes his first lead role in a period drama since 2011's Warrior Baek Dong Soo. Teen actress Kim So Hyun (Who Are You - School 2015) takes on her first ever leading role in a period series. The drama also reunites Infinite's L and actress Yoon So Hee a year after the KBS romance The Day After We Broke Up. The Emperor: Owner of the Mask won Best Drama, Best Screenplay, Excellence Award (Actor) and the KDA Award at the 10th Korea Drama Awards.

In 18th century Joseon, Yeongjo seeks the assistance of a powerful shadow society to usurp the throne. In exchange, he relinquishes control of the water supply and takes a poison that requires a monthly antidote, thus making him beholden to the society for life. To protect his son from a similar fate, he makes Crown Prince Lee Sun (Yoo Seung Ho) wear a mask that hides his face from the world. The young prince grows into a great ruler with the help of his love Han Ga Eun (Kim So Hyun). Sharing the same name as the Crown Prince, commoner Lee Sun (L) becomes the prince's double. However, over time he grows greedy and wants to become the King.
