Produced by and starring mega-star Fan Bingbing, The Empress of China tells the incredible life story of Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history. In the year 637, 14-year-old Wu Zetian (Fan Bingbing) enters the court of Emperor Taizong (Zhang Fengyi) as a Talented Lady. Her beauty and innocence easily entrance the emperor, who takes her in as a consort. Thus, Wu Zetian is thrust into the dangerous world of harem politics, where she must outwit and outsmart all others to survive. After the passing of Taizong, she is sent to a convent. From this low point, she begins anew and sets off on her path to becoming China's only female emperor.

貞觀十一年(公元637年)，荊州武氏小女如意選入大唐後宮。
時逢先皇后長孫皇后忌日，宮廷裡正在排《蘭陵王》之舞，如意以絕妙的舞姿艷壓群芳，並與大唐開國皇帝唐太宗李世民邂逅於承慶殿上，太宗賜名於媚娘。
這年，武媚娘十四歲，太宗三十九歲，一段鮮為人知、曠古淒美的傾世之戀，伴隨著大唐帝國的盛世畫卷娓娓展開。

大祭當晚，秀女鄭婉言死於非命，所有證據指向如意是殺人兇手，她飽受酷刑，被發配掖庭冷宮。
在冷宮中，如意結識了太宗的老乳娘彭氏，彭氏因為當年「玄武門之變」太宗弒兄殺弟而始終不願原諒他，老死也不願相見。
而媚娘成為了太宗和老乳娘的情感紐帶，結開了太宗的心結。
老乳娘死，媚娘出冷宮，太宗冊封她為才人，媚娘一時成為後宮所有女人的眾矢之的，身陷各種爾虞我詐的宮廷陰謀。

貞觀十九年，太宗皇帝率大軍親征高句麗，媚娘女扮男裝隨行於軍中。
在冰天雪地、戰火紛飛的東遼之地，媚娘和太宗共經生死，相伴相依，兩人的感情迸發到最極致。
而媚娘也展現了其出色的軍事和政治謀略，奇招制勝，萬眾歸心，兵中將領們都折服於這個女人。

大軍班師回長安，媚娘被視作妖媚惑主、狼子野心。
朝中眾臣長孫無忌等人卻以「唐三代，武王代之」的預言來離間太宗和媚娘的關係。
高句麗一戰後，太宗的身體日益衰老，與媚娘的分離更讓他愁思難解，積染重病，兩人的愛情歷經著生死離別的考驗。
人生走到終點的太宗終於意識到：權力、政治和帝國都是會枯竭衰老的，唯有愛情，可以延綿永生……

This is not the original, uncensored and unedited Taiwan version. It is in fact the Hong Kong version by TVB, with CGI editing.

Hello . It was so excited tvb have brought this China version series that I love it very much I m not too sure I like fan bing bing but for sure Kathy chow in this series so excellent good performance and make me cry so much when she commite to die that is amzing act I was playback watching so many time it was a lot touching . And Kathy was so sexy and younger beautiful in her age 48 I can believe it look like she on her age 25 that what I think . Agian I miss hoi mei in tvb she have new life in BEjING China but I hope she will be back to tvb once while to continue filming series to tvb plus I like her pair up with Leon Lai or Felix Wang or gallon or Gordon or Derik there are so many chemistry in the series ulike to see agian if any once wann to know about Chinese ancient history than I will said this is good choice to watch well done amzing series from China of course I don't know who is fan bing bing after this series I think I know China actress fan bing bing there u go but I still stand up to support my lovely the best ever is KATHY , HOI MEI former TvB actress.
