YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on the play by Hisashi Inoue, The Face of Jizo (a.k.a. Chichi to Kuraseba) conveys a message close to director Kuroki Kazuo's heart. Set in Hiroshima around 1948, the film dramatizes the traumatic lives of bombing survivors living in postwar Japan, focusing its narrative on the close relationship between a loving father and his devoted daughter. When we first meet Mitsue (Miyazawa Rie from Twilight Samurai and Peony Pavillion), she's making her way home during a turbulent thunderstorm. Strangely, she becomes deathly afraid at the onset of such an everyday occurrence. But why? It turns out that her fear is connected to the fact that she survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Thankfully, she can take comfort in the fact that she lives with her father Takezo (Harada Yoshio from 9 Souls and Azumi), in their partially repaired house. From the get-go, it's clear that her dad isn't just an ordinary father, but a counselor, a mentor, and a true friend. With most of her family and friends dead, Takezo is the only person to whom she can reveal her inner thoughts. As great as this sounds, there's just one "problem" – her father died in the bombing, too!

As a ghost, Takezo is only concerned with his daughter's life and her well-being. When a handsome, but shy researcher named Kinoshita (Asano Tadanobu from Zatoichi and Ichi the Killer) comes to town, Takezo encourages his daughter to take action and embark on an exciting, new romance. Despite her father's wishes, Mitsue refuses to pursue Kinoshita. As a survivor of such a horrible atrocity, Mitsue's guilt is so overwhelming that she believes she has no right to be happy after so many have lost so much. Will Mitsue overcome her guilt to find happiness among the ruins? Find out in Chichi to Kuraseba, a heartwarming tale of one father's enduring love for his only daughter!

Memorable Miyazawa Rie performance Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It is the summer of 1948 amid the ruins of Hiroshima and pretty young Mitsui (Miyazawa Rie), suffering from radiation poisoning, lives day to day consumed by guilt as she dutifully attends to her job as a librarian. She feels guilty for living while all of her friends were obliterated by the bomb and guilty about her inability to save her father's life when he was crushed under their collapsed home. Into her solitary world enters researcher Kinoshita (Asano Tadanobu) and everything changes.

Director Kuroki Kazuo's "The Face of Jizo" tells of the difficulty of resurrecting one's life in the wake of disaster. The arrival of Kinoshita gives Mitsui hope for a new life, but -- haunted by the illogic of her guilt -- she wonders whether she is deserving of this hope. Most of the film's story is told through a series of dialogues between Mitsui and the specter of her dead father, played by Harada Yoshio, who also starred in Kuroki's earlier movie "Roningai". ("The Face of Jizo" originally was a stage play and director Kuroki mounts this film in a manner very similar to a play.) The story's dissection of Mitsui's grief is deep and profoundly moving.

Miyazawa Rie underplays her character's emotions to tremendous effect. Her quiet and subtle approach draws the audience into the film and makes us root for her to enjoy some happiness. Harada Yoshio breathes rambunctious life into the film. While "The Face of Jizo" is very much a Japanese film, its theme of the struggle to overcome grief and guilt is universal. I recommend this movie very highly.

This customer review refers to Chichi to Kuraseba (The Face of Jizo) Premium Edition (Limited Edition)(Japan Version - English Subtitles)
A touching story Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The background of this story is the around WW2, actually that's quite a sensitive background to many ppl... but this story is mainly about the love.
Many ppl will not treasure a friend or their parents until they actually lose them. This story is talking about "to love and treasure someone". And Rie dare not to love others, but when it comes, no one can stop them anyway... The whole story moves not very fast, but can "draw" a very beautiful picture of everyone's heart. you'd feel warm and touching after watching this DVD.
