After making a splash with his 2018 debut G Affairs, up-and-coming Hong Kong director Lee Cheuk Pan again demonstrates a distinct flair for edgy themes and visuals in his sophomore effort The Fallen. Starring veteran actress Irene Wan, Kenny Kwan and G Affairs' Hanna Chan, the grueling tale of crime, drugs and violence was screened at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, Osaka Asian Film Festival and Silk Road International Film Festival.
The oldest daughter of a legendary meth kingpin, Rain (Irene Wan) left home and disappeared many years ago. She suddenly returns right when her family is going through turbulent changes and power struggle. Rain's family members (Kenny Kwan and Hanna Chan), power-hungry old guard Uncle Fire (Eddie Chen) and the police all have skin in the game and moves up their sleeves. Taking advantage of the volatile situation, Rain uses the opportunity to stoke conflicts between different parties and enact her own revenge plan.

Saw this movie twice in Hong Kong & Osaka!
Saw this movie twice in Hong Kong & Osaka!
| I saw this movie twice in Hong Kong during the 2019 Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and twice in Osaka during the 2020 Osaka Asian Film Festival. Great acting by 溫碧霞 Irene Wan and 陳漢娜 Hanna Chan in the scenes between mother and daughter. The subtle underlying affinity between the two draws the audience in early on in the movie when Rain runs into Snow at a clothing boutique. By the end of the movie one comes to understand Rain’s suffering and pain. You cannot imagine how she survived such unbearable tragedies bestowed upon her by Don, her guardian and the meth Kingpin of Asia. Reality and existence must be excruciating as she seems to get by by numbing herself with sex and drugs. At the end perhaps there is no winner. One is left to wonder would she ever heal and find peace in this world, or would she continue to walk alone in solemn solitude? The Fallen is a movie that makes one wonder about the human condition and human suffering. What is existence? Are there things people do to escape or evade reality because reality is too painful? To what extent are individuals victims of their own environment? If people are born into an evil environment, can they ever overcome it? Rain lived. She survived twice, but is she really living or is she just a walking zombie, haunted by her past, half alive and half high all the time? I really liked the use of the imagery of flowers down to the details of insects and nature, and the pupil of the eye to convey the vivid physiological and psychological effects of the drugs. The intimate scenes were also elegantly filmed, I really like how the camera showed the actors’ and actresses’ bare backs, without revealing too much. Some of the scenes were actually quite humorous with tricks of lighting and colors along with an odd record playing music in the background. It would have been nice to have more action fighting scenes or fighting moves with Kenny Kwan, but even without them, audiences are in for a surprise where they will see a rather different side or shall I say a rougher and sexier side of Kenny Kwan in this film.
