YesAsia Editorial Description

Bittersweet revenge is the name of the game in The Fearless Hyena Series. The Fearless Hyena marks the directorial debut of Jackie Chan, who also stars as the young layabout village boy Lung seeking vengeance after his master is brutally murdered. A vicious general (Yam Sai Kun) has been roaming the country, systematically wiping out his grandfather's clan. Finally dragged out of lethargy, Lung sets out in hot pursuit of the villainous general.

What could so easily have turned into yet another formulaic revenge piece emerges as an unmissable piece of Hong Kong action comedy, thanks in large part to the playful performances and expertly handled fight choreography. Lung's ineptitude forces him back into training before he can exact his revenge, prompting many highly amusing, as well as skillfully played out training sequences.

Fearless Hyena Part II was made four years later, and is quite a different animal. Jackie Chan walked out on the film after filming only a few scenes of this sequel. Somehow, Lo Wei and director Chan Chuen were able to use the footage already filmed and splice it together with previously unused sequences from Chan's earlier projects. The result is a surprisingly coherent and entertaining yarn, following Lung and his estranged brother, played by Austin Wai, as they are reunited to avenge the death of their mentor at the hands of the evil Heaven and Earth Devils. While not as accomplished as the original, Fearless Hyena Part II is worth seeing, if only as an opportunity to see numerous sequences of Chan's early work that would doubtless have never seen the light of day otherwise.

Great classic Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Both are collectibles for different reasons n only if u r a JC fan.
FEARLESS HYENA ( FH1 )is a great classic n as another reviewer mentioned, it was JC's directorial debut. The history behind this is most interesting. JC made it Bigtime for Yuen Woo Ping in Snake n Eagle shadow and Drunken Master classics. However he was still contracted to 'No Way Lo Wai' n now dat JC was star, LW wasnt going to let JC off easy.
He recalled JC to make a movie n it was only after JC went on strike n literally absconded from d movie set dat L W finally agreed to allow JC to direct dis movie n on condition he be allowed to strike out on his own after dat.
JC made FH1 which was a hit n JC signed up with Raymond Chow GOLDEN HARVEST to make 'The Young Master'
In d process of filming TYM, JC was 'kidnapped' by Triads purportedly on behalf of L W to fulfill his original contract wif LW.
While JC's friend n once top star Wang Yu negotiated wif d triad boss n LW to release JC, d latter started filming material which were later used by LW n rehashed wif scenes from FH1 n finished off wif a double - to be released as FH2 a purported sequel to FH1.
Even though most of FH2 was filmed wif a double , d story isnt particularly bad albeit a kinda repetition of FH1 of sorts. Fight choreography is fairly decent n had d usual badass fight cast one tends to see used for lots of such old skool movies of the 70s n 80s including a young Austin Wai the brother of Shaw Brothers top starlet Kara Wai Ying Hung.
All in all not a bad Old Skool JC classic collection n one which I still enjoy watching again n again...

Chan's first directoral film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This review is for Fearless Hyena 1 and not for #2. I will talk later about # 2. But first, Fearless Hyena: It's the first time Jackie had the freedom to work on a film. The result is impressive for a first film. The story is not very original but for the time ( 1980 ) it was the standar ( revenge/training plot ). Jackie show"s off some great fights and training sequences, plus you get to see him in superb physical condition. The bad guy in this movie is a great kung fu actor, I d'ont remenber his name but he also play with jackie in Dragon fist and also in Jet Li's Once upon a time in china part 1 ( Jet is fighting him at the end with all those ladders. So that's why I give this film a 8 out 10. I highly recommended this film for fans of old school martial arts films.

Now, for Fearless #2, you get to see Jackie only in a few scenes cause he left the company right in the middle of shooting this movie. That's when he went to Golden Harvest and did Young Master. So for the few scenes he is in it's good but 75% of the rest is just a look a like Jackie, plus the story does not make sense. So here it is.
