Over two decades since the manga and anime ended their runs, Slam Dunk manga creator Inoue Takehiko reignited fervor and nostalgia for the Shohoku High School basketball team in the dynamic animated feature film The First Slam Dunk, which earned blockbuster box office and rave reviews throughout Asia. Released in Japan in 2022, The First Slam Dunk won Animation of the Year at the 46th Japan Academy Prize and grossed over US$260 million worldwide to become the fifth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time globally.

Written and directed by Inoue Takehiko in his directorial debut, The First Slam Dunk reveals the stirring backstory of point guard Miyagi Ryota that wasn't told in the manga. Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota played basketball from a young age to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a top prospect before tragedy struck. Fueled by love and loss, Miyagi's basketball journey also reveals the bumpy origin story of how the Shohoku High School basketball team came together and made their mark in the legendary game against Sannoh High's championship team in the interhigh basketball tournament.
