Taiwan director Tom Lin (Zinnia Flower) adapts Malaysian writer Tan Twan Eng's award-winning 2012 novel The Garden of Evening Mists into a lyrical romance drama. Nominated in nine categories at the 56th Golden Horse Awards, The Garden of Evening Mists is set in 1940s and 1950s Malaya during the revolutionary tumult of war, Japanese occupation and the independence movement. Angelica Lee and Sylvia Chang play the protagonist at different ages in this lushly shot love story co-starring Japanese actor Abe Hiroshi.
During WWII, Yun Ling (Angelica Lee) runs away alone from a POW camp and survives, while blaming herself for the death of her sister. A few years later, she decides to learn from mysterious Japanese gardener Nakamura Aritomo (Abe Hiroshi) in hopes of building a garden in memory of her sister. Though Nakamura's Japanese identity occasionally reminds Yun Ling of her war trauma, a forbidden love gradually blossoms between them.
