YesAsia Editorial Description

The closing film of the 2014 Venice Film Festival, Ann Hui's (A Simple Life) star-studded biographical drama The Golden Era chronicles the life of maverick writer Xiao Hong (1911-1942), portrayed by Tang Wei (Lust, Caution). Featuring a massively talented supporting cast that includes William Feng (White Vengeance), Zhu Yawen (Red Sorghum), Hao Lei (Summer Palace) and Tian Yuan (Bends), the film expounds on the pursuit of freedom, dreams and stability in a tumultuous period in Chinese history, referencing notable literary figures such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun and Ding Ling along the way.

A product of an unhappy childhood, Xiao Hong arrives in Harbin in her early 20s and begins her career as a writer. There, she meets and subsequently enters into a relationship with writer and newspaper editor Xiao Jun (William Feng), but the often turbulent romance ends five years later. Her journeys during this time take her to Qingdao, Shanghai and Wuhan, and in each city she defiantly hones her craft despite opposition from various authorities and the danger posed by the Japanese military.

This edition includes a making-of featurette.

Xiao Hong, one of most radiant female writers, lived through the most turbulent times in contemporary China. Although the basic facts about her life are easy to establish, much of the detail remains obscure. Her estrangement from her father sparked a long quest for an emotionally satisfying life. She was rescued from poverty by writer Xiao Jun, but their competitive relationship brought her more heartache than joy. While escaping the Japanese invasion, she married novelist Duanmu Hongliang and fled together to Hong Kong, which soon fell to the Japanese. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 31. Prominent and prolific Hong Kong helmer Ann Hui recreates the life of the pioneering and prodigiously talented 20th-century legendary novelist. Premiering as the closing film at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, THE GO LDEN ERA is also selected for Toronto International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival.
