YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Ishii Yuya (Mitsuko Delivers, Sawako Decides) pays tribute to the unsung heroes of the dictionary world in The Great Passage. Based on the best-selling novel by Miura Shiwon, this gentle comedy follows a group of dictionary editors and their decade-long effort to create the ultimate "living dictionary." Matsuda Ryuhei (Nana) gives a hilariously droll performance as Majime, the stone-faced newcomer who discovers his true calling in dictionary editing, while Odagiri Joe steals the show as Majime's charming co-worker. Japan's representative at the 2013 Academy Awards' Best Foreign Film race, The Great Passage is an inspiring dramedy dedicated to wordsmiths everywhere.

When the longtime editor at The Dictionary Editorial Department of Genbu Books resigns, he goes on a search for a word-obsessed replacement that can continue his work. By chance, they stumble upon Majime (Matsuda Ryuhei), an introverted salesperson with zero talent in sales and a passion for words. Majime's first project is The Great Passage, a new venture to create the ultimate "living dictionary" for the modern world. The idea of spending over a decade on a dictionary seems daunting to Majime, co-worker Masashi (Odagiri Joe) and the rest of the team at first, but their dedication to the project carries them through various obstacles. However, when Kaguya (Miyazaki Aoi), the granddaughter of Majime's landlady, moves into their building, Majime discovers a problem that words can't solve: love.

The definition of excellence Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Great Passage" might just be the first movie ever made about the creation of a dictionary. Of course, director Ishii Yuya's film actually is about much more. At Genbu Books, Dictionary Department Director Matsumoto (Kato Go) long has dreamed of creating a new dictionary of the Japanese language as it actually is used, including colloquialisms and slang usages. Unfortunately, now that he has received the green light for the project (which is to be called The Great Passage), his right hand man, Editor Araki (Kobayashi Kaoru), reveals his desire to retire in order to devote himself to the care of his seriously ill wife. Matsumoto directs Araki that he must find a suitable replacement to fill his position before he retires.

Finding willing candidates to work in the geeky dictionary department is difficult. Araki stumbles upon Majime Mitsu (Matsuda Ryuhei), an expressionless, tongue-tied 'fish out of water' in the publisher's sales department. Araki assesses that Majime's severe introversion masks a single-minded focus that could prove perfectly appropriate for the meticulous work of compiling a new dictionary.

Majime quickly becomes the obsessive workhorse of the dictionary department. Outside of the workplace, Majime's only human contact is with the kind elderly landlady of his rooming house. When the old woman's quietly beautiful granddaughter Kaguya (Miyazaki Aoi), an apprentice chef, moves into the house to assist her grandmother, Majime is captivated by her sweet nature. A greater mismatch is hard to imagine, but Majime earnestly pleads his love for her in a flowery, brush-written note that Kaguya finds incomprehensible.

The development of the new dictionary and the diligent efforts of the dedicated editorial staff prove strangely involving and Majime's love for Kaguya provides a tasty icing on the top of this cinematic cake. I think something more is afoot in this fine film: Majime's tongue-tied, blank-faced, singularly focused personality suggests someone with either high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome. If I am correct in my unscientific diagnosis, then the truly triumphant 'great passage' here is Majime's growth into functioning, successful adulthood. "The Great Passage" is very highly recommended.
