YesAsia Editorial Description

One of Hong Kong's most classic television series ever, TVB's 1992 drama The Greed of Man set the model for all grand modern dramas that would follow. Backdropped by the financial turbulence of 1980s and 90s Hong Kong, The Greed of Man tells a ruthless and tragic saga of family rivalry, power struggle, and the violent pursuit of wealth. Shedding his heroic swordsman image, Adam Cheng creates his most memorable modern drama role in Ding Hai, a man of humble origins and ruthless determination who is consumed by his own greed. Produced by renowned director Wai Ka Fai, The Greed of Man features an amazing lineup of veteran actors and rising stars. Adam Cheng's enormous performance leads the way for a cast that includes Damian Lau, Lau Ching Wan, Michael Tao, David Siu, Derek Kwok, Ng Kai Ming, Kenneth Tsang, and Bowie Lam, plus Amy Kwok, Vivian Chow, Nammie Yam, Rachel Lee, and Yeung Ling.

Uneducated, stubborn, and somewhat mad, Ding Hai (Adam Cheng) befriends and later murders wealthy stockbroker Fong Chun Sun (Damian Lau). From this shocking betrayal begins a long and harrowing cycle of revenge and violence that extends many years and trickles mercilessly down to the next generation. Fong's son Chin Bok (Lau Ching Wan) struggles to continue his father's battle against corruption in the stock markets, while Ding and his four equally ruthless sons ride their tides in the market and the underworld, acquiring great wealth and leaving a bloody trail behind them. As the enmity between the Ding and Fong families builds and boils, life and death are eventually settled on the trading floor.

Stock markets often dictate the fates of characters onscreen, but Ding Hai is perhaps the only character that can claim the opposite. Hong Kong stocks plunged dramatically during the series' broadcast, and The Greed of Man came to be linked with the market in real life, marking the beginning of a phenomenon dubbed the "Ding Hai Effect" - whenever Adam Cheng dramas are aired, the stock markets inexplicably fall.

The Greed Of Man (DVD)(Uncut Edition) Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
More cuts from the uncut ver dvd, I was so disappointed that the scene was deleted,
where the youngest sister's of fong family trying to jump off the building to kill herself,
I was laughing hard when i compare my dvd wif my vcd. TVB should include those cut scene as
deleted feattures or release an unrated ver instead...hahaha

If you like The Wild Bunch(十三太保) (DVD), sorry to say that this's also a cut ver...

Brilliant Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This drama is worth buying. I had got it for £25 on sale and so what a bargain.
This drama is one of the dramatic series ever and I must recommend for viewers
who haven't watched it before. All you hear is Adam Cheng roaring and shouting and
when he has nothing left, he makes his sons take their
own life and all because of greed.

A work of art Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Enough people have reviewed this classic – you can even find a good write-up of the series on Wikipedia now – so I would not waste words on the story-line. However, the DVD set that just came out deserves a few words because TVB has finally come up with a product worthy of the series.

There are 10 DVDs with four episodes each. Each episode is by itself so viewers can select a specific episode from the menu. In doing so, TVB also corrected one of the worst sins of the VCDs – cutting out the opening theme song and ending credits from each episode. The DVDs restored both. The ending credits were integral to several episodes e.g. Faye Wong’s song continued into the ending credits in Episode 36 and the flashback montage during the credits of the last episode were gems much missed from the VCDs. And even more amazing – English subtitles! And the translation is quite adequate too (except for the inability to differentiate between pork and beef :)! Could it be TVB has finally decided that the Western market is worth attending too?

The video is crisp and sharp, the color superbly vibrant – it is such an improvement from the VCDs that watching the series gives a whole new level of enjoyment. Some minor blunders have been cleaned up e.g. the harnesses worn by the Ting brothers as they were falling down the Stock Exchange building could be clearly seen in the VCDs were hardly visible in the DVDs.

The audio has been cleaned up some too. In Episode 37, background noise almost drowned out Yuen Mui’s words when she confronted Ding Hou Hai in the VCD version. The noise is still there in the DVD but at least we can heard her clearly now.

Though the years, I’ve paid for every version of this series – the knocked off 40 VCDs from Malaysia, the VCDs from TVB … finally, I got value for my money. It only took 16 years :) If TVB maintains this quality, I can certainly be persuaded to buy more ….

Still Waiting For The DVD... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Great Series, this help spawn Lau Ching Wan's movie carreer. Story was touching, the actors were brilliantly cast. A masterpiece. But with all the people praising it why haven't the DVD came out yet. This is my little theory to it...
When TVB finally decided to pushed these vcds out, the market was changing rapidly, with the computer boom, and rising sales of DVDs... "Plain and Simple," TVB over printed this series in a bad quality format! Someone probably in a meeting said, "I want the best retouched quality in this vcd"(haha!! best quality in a vcd) and so it took a bit longer to released it. when it finally gets released, the market had a taste of the DVD quality, and guess what, we liked and never turned back since. The picture quality is 10 times better than the vcd and sound... lets just say it almost matched the video(back then) so with all these printed vcds and slow sales, they are really banging their head to the wall, because they do not want to mark it down too much in fear that if too many people own it, no one will buy the dvd version, and those who bought it will feel ripped-off, so they wait, kept it at a certain price and hope someday they will make enough profit to cover the loss of throwing away the left over vcd copies and start selling the DVD version. tick tock, tick tock, i am still waiting...

Song Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It's a great movie, that's for certain.
But I'm looking for the song that Lau Ching Wan and Vivian Chow sang in the movie. I know the English title "Red River Valley", but can anyone tell me what the chinese title is of this song and where can I find it?
Thanks a lot :)
