YesAsia Editorial Description
Based on the best-selling autobiography by Tamura Hiroshi of popular manzai duo Kirin, the feature film Homeless Chugakusei (a.k.a. The Homeless Student) details the comedian's poignant experiences as a homeless teen during his junior high school days. Released in 2007, Tamura's book sold over a million copies in just two months, and was quickly picked up in 2008 for a Fuji TV drama special and a silver-screen adaptation directed by Furumaya Tomoyuki (Naoko). Winner of the Best Newcomer award at the 32nd Japan Academy Awards, baby-faced pop idol Koike Teppei (Kids) of WaT stars as the high school student who finds himself suddenly without a home after his parents go bankrupt and separate. With nowhere to turn, he begins to live in the park. Homeless Chugakusei co-stars Ikewaki Chizuru (10 Promises to My Dog) and comedian Nishino Akihiro of comedy duo King Kong as Tamura Hiroshi's siblings.

Touchingly rendered family film
Touchingly rendered family film
"The Homeless Student" steers clear of mawkish sentimentality by telling its uplifting story with refreshing honesty and a dash of humor. Fourteen year old Hiroshi (Koike Teppei) and his college student brother (Nishino Akihiro) and high school student sister (Ikewaki Chizuru) find themselves suddenly homeless when their widower father can't pay the rent on their apartment and 'dismisses' his children from his life. The despondent Hiroshi meets his shocking new circumstances by turning inward; he chooses not to share his plight with his siblings, but instead strives to be self-sufficient by living within an unusually shaped slide (resembling a giant turd) in a public park.
The film traces his attempt to make a life for himself by finding a few yen in the change slot of vending machines, then reaching out to a friend for help, and, ultimately, through the gracious assistance of some caring adults, rebuilding a semblance of family life with his brother and sister, while coming to grips with his father's abandonment and, even more powerfully with the death of his mother when he was very young. Koike Teppei delivers a brave performance, Nishino Akihiro sets just the right tone of brotherly affection, and Ikewaki Chizuru as the unfailingly loving and cheerful sister becomes the beating heart of the movie. Although Yamada Yoji apparently had nothing to do with the making of "The Homeless Student", this feels very much like one of his films (one can imagine it as 'Gakko V: The Homeless Student'), particularly because the movie boasts two of the leading ladies from his Tora-San series -- Tanaka Yuko and Ishida Ayumi. Among the very real accomplishments of this film is the way in which it immerses the viewer within the mindset of an ordinary fourteen year old boy struggling to come to grips with extraordinary circumstances. "The Homeless Student" makes for very compelling viewing. |
