Members of the feudal Yeung family are distant and aloof to each other. Cheung-ying, the fourth son of the Yeung family, goes back home to visit his sick father and is sad to see the depressing family.

His eldest brother died young leaving his widow managing the family. She is always complained about and discriminated by her two shrewish sisters-in-law. Her son Chun-yi is the only hope of her life. The wife of the cowardly second son Cheung has an adulterous relationship with her cousin and is carrying his child. She is planning to leave the family with her lover. The malignant third son Wai constantly asks for money from his family. His wife comes from a poor family, her inferiority makes her an agitator gossiping and spreading rumours.
Ying is coaxed to return home to restore family order, but the family is way beyond redemption. His uncle comes ostensibly to pay respect to his father, but in fact he comes to force Ying's father to sell the house, which he claims is his property. Chun-yi dies of illness and his broken-hearted mother moves to live in a covent. Since Ying does not want his father to hear any more bad news, he promises his uncle that he will give his share. He also promises to look for a job for maid Wing-lan who has been suffering from her master Wai. However before Lan leaves, Wai rapes her and causes her to be expelled.

When the uncle sends a lawyer to get the money, Ying admits that he is unable to pay. Hence, the family is asked to leave. Wai is arrested as he cannot pay his debt, his wife goes back to her family in shame. Cheung's wife sends a baby to Cheung and asks him to take care of him for her. The baby is in fact from Cheung's cousin. Cheung cannot stand the insult and shoots himself. The uncle is arrested by the police as he smuggles opium. Ying's father buys Ying a ticket and asks him to go back to college to continue his studies while he and Lan move to his tenth cousin's place. Lan will be a shopkeeper of the tofu shop owned by the tenth cousin and begin her new life there. Ying's eldest sister-in-law also comes back from the covent to take care of Ying's father.
