王文興為台灣著名作家，其作品《家變》在1973年發表時引起爭議，因形式、內容甚至語言都是全新的，這部作品至今仍被討論不斷。生於福建，1946年舉家遷台，高中畢業後至台大外文系與同學白先勇等人創辦《現代文學》雜誌，影響台灣文壇甚鉅。曾獲得國家文藝獎（台灣）、藝術及文學勳章的騎士勳位（法國）。本片以21個線索為主軸，藉由年輕小說家尋訪的蹤跡，串起王文興的文學生涯。導演林靖傑並藉由影像、照片、手稿、動畫、舞台劇、即興朗誦等形式，展現了一個信守文字信仰、珍重對待寫作、以緩慢換取深刻的文學身影。讓讀者觀眾得以凝見，那在斗室內如同挖掘壕溝般一斧一鑿搬運著胸膛內的土，小說家與自己搏鬥的每一夜……。
