The friendship between two men is put to test when they fall for the same woman in the MBC period drama The King in Love. Based on Kim Yi Ryung's same-titled novel, the historical romance tells the bitter love story of a mixed-blood prince during the Goryeo dynasty. After playing a bold undercover cop in the gangster blockbuster The Merciless, Im Si Wan becomes an aggressive prince torn between friendship and love in his small screen comeback co-starring Hong Jong Hyun (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) and Im Yoon Ah (The K2). A collaboration between director Kim Sang Hyub (Glamorous Temptation) and screenwriter Song Ji Na (Healer), the drama also includes Oh Min Suk (Secrets of Women), Jung Bo Suk (Monster, Lee Ki Young (Ruler: Master of the Mask) and child stars Nam Da Reum (Memory), Yoon Chan Young (Blow Breeze) and Lee Seo Yeon (The World of Us).

Due to his mixed heritage, young crown prince Wang Won (Nam Da Reum) was always alone until he meets his best friend Wang Rin (Yoon Chan Young), an upright child from a noble family. One day, they come across a group of gangsters who kill the wife of Goryeo's richest man Eun Young Baek (Lee Ki Young). To protect his family, Young Baek decides to hide his young daughter Eun San (Lee Seo Yeon), who lives as a servant to cover her identity. Years later, Won (Im Si Wan) and Rin (Hong Jong Hyun) re-encounter Eun San (Im Yoon Ah). The three become good friends but their friendship turns into a messy love triangle.
