YesAsia Editorial Description
One of the most important turning points in Japanese political history is now a film from beloved writer-director Mitani Koki! Based on his own novel, The Kiyosu Conference is a humorous account of the meeting convened to decide the fate of the nation after the death of Oda Nobunaga. Mitani depicts the meeting as a battle of wits between two factions inside of the shogunate, and the winner will take rule of an entire nation. Like all Mitani films, The Kiyosu Conference features an all-star cast filled with familiar faces: Yakusho Koji (Suite Dreams), Oizumi Yo (The Detective in the Bar), Sato Koichi (The Magic Hour), Tsumabuki Satoshi (Tokyo Family), Suzuka Kyoka (Flowers), Nakatani Miki (Memories of Matsuko) and Matsuyama Kenichi (Death Note).
1582, Japan. When Oda Nobunaga and his eldest son are forced to take their own lives, his chief retainers – including Shibata Katsuie (Yakusho Koji) and Hashiba Hideyoshi (Oizumi Yo) – convene at Kiyosu Castle to decide on the fate of the shogunate. The chief retainers immediately split into two factions, with the conservative Shibata pushing for Nobunaga's second son and with the wily, charismatic Hideyoshi pushing for another candidate. What follows is a fierce battle of wits that will go into the history books as Japan's first political summit.

Mitani's latest undertaking is a historical epic. Just before the unification of Japan, Oda was forced to take his own life at Honno-ji Temple during a violent revolt. Following Oda's death, Japan held the Kiyosu Conference, the conference that changed the course of history, to resolve the Oda clan's succession of leadership. "This film is not a comedy. It's a Human Comedy," explains Mitani. In his new venture, Mitani portrays the people's desperate lives during these times in a comedic yet endearingly human way. Be prepared to be entertained by a historical epic filled with laughter, surprise and drama!

Simply a masterpiece
Simply a masterpiece
Director Mitani Koki's "The Kiyosu Conference" is part Machiavellian political thriller, part Shakespearean historical epic, and 100% Mitani Koki warm-hearted human comedy. The film opens with the violent deaths of warlord Oda Nobunaga and his eldest son Nobutada. A conference then is called to appoint the next leader of the Oda clan. As one of the characters wisely states, the meeting will be "war in the guise of a conference."
As this film tells it, the conference becomes a tussle between two rival factions, one led by chief vassal Shibata Katsuie (Yakusho Koji) and the other led by peasant-turned-general Toyotomi Hideyoshi, known more commonly as Tokichiro or Monkey (Oizumi Yo). Shibata backs Oda Nobutaka to be the successor, while Tokichiro backs Oda Nobukatsu. Both are flawed candidates. Nobutaka is an unassuming man born of a concubine; Nobukatsu is a moronic clown. Tokichiro is desperate to carry the day and cement his own commanding position by finding a better option, while Shibata's attentions are diverted by his obsessive love for Nobunaga's sister Lady Oichi (Suzuki Kyoka). The scheming never ceases to fascinate, the cinematography, costuming, and set decoration are sumptuous, and director Mitani brightens the proceedings with his deft comic touch. Oizumi Yo shines in a revelatory performance as the quick-witted Tokichiro. Yakusho Koji gives a Falstaffian turn to Shibata. Nakatani Miki is an earthy delight as Tokichiro's wife. "The Kiyosu Conference" is a long, complex tale, but it holds the viewer's interest throughout and left this viewer wanting more. Can I hope for a sequel? |
