YesAsia Editorial Description

This Taiwan television series shot in 1992 is widely accepted to be the definitive adaptation of the Chinese folklore legend The Legend of White Snake. The 50-episode fantasy romance tells how Bai Su Zhen, the white snake spirit, falls in love with mortal scholar Xu Xian. The two get married, but Bai is hunted by monk Fa Hai, who eventually traps Bai underneath a pagoda. Bai would find redemption 20 years later with her son, Xu Shi Lin.

The inspired cast is perhaps one of the main reasons this series attained classic status. Angie Chiu proved popular with the viewers as Bai, as did Cecilia Yip playing the handsome male lead Xu Xian. Both of them play two roles, with Yip doubling as the grown-up Xu Shi Lin and Chiu playing the rabbit spirit who is sent to kill (but ends up falling for) Xu. In supporting roles are Maggie Chan as the green snake and Qian De Men as Fa Hai.

The series features many Chinese folk-style songs and this digitally remastered edition includes a collection of these theme songs as a bonus.

Product Information

The legend of white snake is a beautiful and moving folktale. It tells how the fairy maiden bai suzhen struggles against the rascally monk fa hai, the representative of the reactionary feudal forces, in her pursuit fo freedoms and happiness, reflecting the sharp conflict between the common people and feudal ruling clases. In this story we see the people's yearning for freedom and their ever-defiant stand against the oppressive forces of feudalism.

The story has evolved over a period of about hundreds of years. Textual research indicates that it first appeared in the song dynast (960-1279) story-tellers' prompt book the legend of the three tower by the west lake. In the ming dynasty (1368-1644) it appeared under the title madam bai crushed under thunder pagoda in the story collection Jingshi Tongyan. In the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) it was the theme of the opers, the legand of thunder pagoda, and then Later it is a theme in the tanci (a form of storytelling to the accompaniment of stringed instruments) repertoire, under the title the righteous witch, and others.

Series is great - quality, not so much Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I watched this series a long time ago with my mother on the Chinese television channel in California, and I remember falling in love with the story. However, since I am not fluent in Chinese, I was not able to understand it all, so imagine my delight to find this again with English subtitles!

I will preface this review with this: the show itself is decent. Growing up as an American, I admit there were some parts that I needed to get used to, like the parts when people suddenly break into song with performance-art-hands - I assume it's a Chinese theater thing I didn't grow up with. Also, the special effects are a little hokey, but I've watched enough bits and pieces of Chinese dramas growing up to know it's kind of run-of-the-mill.

That aside, the story and characters are wonderful. I have no issues with the narrative or characterizations and really enjoy it. I hope many others do or will, too.

The part I do want to point out is the quality of the DVD. Picture and audio quality are on the low side. There are parts in the DVDs I've watched so far that skip/freeze - I've had to skip ahead with much labor trying to find the sweet spot to continue the DVD, or spent minutes on the disc getting hung up. I am currently on the disc with episodes 37-39, and that disc doesn't work AT ALL.

I submitted a request to hopefully get a replacement, but it's over the 14-day return policy (oh yes, receiving the item also took a long while since shipping). Plus, being that the series is 50-episodes long.. well.. obviously, I couldn't have run through it all in 14 days.

If you do buy this product, enjoy the narrative and characters, but don't be surprised if the quality is on the shoddy side. Try and review all discs ASAP to make sure they work. I am generally a generous person who overlooks slight skips in quality, but the frequency and degree of glitches with these discs genuinely disappointed me. :(

The Waiting is over! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
After I read the comment from other buyer, i didn't hesitate to buy it right away. Definitely worth it every
dollar that I pay. I think YesAsia.Com should provided the gift came along with the product such as poster
or sourvenier from the movie or discount coupon for next purchasing. However, the delivery process are quite
take time. I have been waiting for shipment for 2 weeks. it seems forever to me. However, I want to
reconfirm same as other buyer that the last disc was not digital remaster at all. YesAsia.Com should consult with the producer to fix this error soon. If you guy are Big fan of Angie Shiu, this is the good one to catch.
For my opinion, the price are quite too expensive it should be around 30-35 dollar are reasonable price for
the fan who really want to keep it for personal collection. Buy it now before it went out. You won't be
regret. Love u forever Angie Shiu.

Great quality show Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I was addicted to the series when it was first shown in Singapore 13 years ago and had searched high and low for the video/VCD/DVD with no avail until I stumbled on this last year. Bought it and did not regret it. The digitally remastered version offers crisp image viewing and lots of satisfaction because it now has English subtitles (although quite poorly written, but they get the point across). I won't repeat what the other reviewers have said re the contents and quality of the show but I would note that the last disc is not digitally remastered. Initially I had wondered if my disc was faulty but after checking with YesAsia, it turns out the entire batch did not have the last disc digitally remastered. Not sure if this is an oversight on the part of the producers of the edition but the difference in image quality between that last disc and the first 49 discs is quite stark so do be prepared for it if you get the product (which I would still highly recommend!).
