An early Five Tigers title, TVB's 1981 period drama The Lonely Hunter marked the first leading role for top 80s star Felix Wong, who had only recently graduated from the studio's acting program at the time. Wong rose to instant stardom when the drama was aired, and The Lonely Hunter remains one of his most representative works. Also making his acting breakthrough in a signature morally conflicted role was fellow Tiger Michael Miu who found immediate heartthrob status with his dashing looks. As a sign of TVB's push for the up-and-coming newcomers, Miu and Wong were supported by stars like Carol Cheng, Shek Sau, Lau Daan, and Chan Man Yee in the drama. Revolving around underworld power struggle in Old Shanghai, this 25-episode classic is a great opportunity to see two of Hong Kong's greatest television actors in early star-making roles.

Lee Tong (Felix Wong) grew up with only one intent in mind: revenge. After his gangster father died in the hands of friends Fang and Fong, Tong was raised by his father's henchman, trained to be a lone assassin. Coming of age, he finally sets his plan into action and kills an underworld boss. Timid driver Au Yeung Gong (Michael Miu) unwittingly witnesses the crime but is too scared to rat out Lee, leading to an unexpected friendship. Gong ends up helping Tong enter the organization, laying the path for Tong's revenge. As time passes, Tong's cold and lonely front begins to fade as he experiences life, love, and friendship for the time, but Gong is slowly transformed from a naive youth to a cold-blooded killer.

范展雲(楊群)、方雨庭(張天河)及李棠(黃日華)的父親李元龍原是上海黑幫的三大龍頭人物，雲卻於一次混亂中誤殺了龍，龍手下管四(關海山)旋即帶棠及親生兒女管龍(廖啟智)及管?(陳敏兒)走避香港，悉心訓練三人，實現復仇大計。

其後雲與庭到了香港，棠存心施計與好友歐陽剛(苗僑偉)接近雲，兩人並成為雲的左右手。棠恨雲深切，不擇手段擄取雲獨女玉瑩(鄭裕玲)的芳心，因而與劉敏夫(石修)對敵。在棠的策劃下，雲與庭反目展開連串火併，棠滿以為復仇大計逐一實現，卻驀然發現自己身陷險境，危機四伏…

FAN CHIN-Wan (Yang Qun), Fong YUE-TING (Zhang Tianhe) and LEE YUEN-LUNG, father of LEE TONG (Wong Yat Wa), are the three main gang leaders in Shanghai. LUNG is later accidentally killed by WAN in a mishap, following which his assistant KOON SZ (Kwan Hoi San) flees to Hong Kong with TONG and his own children KOON KUNG (Lui Kai Chi) and KOON FUNG (Chan Man Yee). To avenge LUNG's death, SZ starts to train the three kids.

A few years later, WAN and TING have moved to Hong Kong. TONG and his best buddy AU-YUENG KONG (Miu Kiu Wai) seek to approach WAN and finally manage to become his assistants. Desperate for revenge, TONG means to woo WAN's only daughter YUK-YING (Cheng Yu Ling) and has thus seriously offended LAU MAN-FU (Shek Sau). Having fallen into TONG's trap, WAN and TING begin to fall out and attack each other. While still reveling in the joy of revenge, TONG suddenly comes to realize that he is beset by dangers and teetering on the verge of death...
