Set in the gloomy period of the Korean War, screenwriter Cheon Sung Il's directorial debut The Long Way Home depicts the warm friendship between two abandoned soldiers played by veteran actor Sol Kyung Gu (My Dictator) and rising star Yeo Jin Gu (Shoot Me in the Heart). Though the comedic war drama features spectacular battle scenes, Cheon concentrates on the individual plights behind the war.

Middle-aged farmer Nam Bok (Sol Kyung Gu) is conscripted into the South Korean army, leaving behind a wife and newborn baby. He is assigned a mission to deliver a classified military document. On the way to the destination, he gets attacked by enemies and unfortunately loses the document. North Korean soldier Yeong Gwang (Yeo Jin Gu), whose unit has also been wiped out, happens to obtain the secret document while driving his tank to the North, and Nam Bok desperately chases after him. Both hoping to return home one day, the two soon become unlikely friends and help each other through the war.

This edition comes with a 48-page photobook, making-of featurette, character video, interviews, poster shooting and trailers.

줄거리

“너는 탱크! 나는 비밀문서! 전쟁의 운명이 두 쫄병에게 달렸다!”

휴전 3일전, 농사 짓다 끌려온 남한군 ‘남복(설경구)’은 전쟁의 운명을 가를 일급 비밀문서를 정해진 장소, 정해진 시간까지 전달하라는 임무를 받게 되지만, 인민군의 습격으로 동료들과 비밀문서까지 모두 잃게 된다. 탱크는 책으로만 배운 북한군 탱크병 ‘영광(여진구)’은 남으로 진군하던 도중 무스탕기의 폭격으로 사수를 잃고 혼자 남게 된다. 탱크를 끌고 홀로 북으로 돌아가려던 ‘영광’은 우연히 남복의 비밀문서를 손에 쥐게 되고 서부전선에서 단둘이 맞닥뜨리게 되는데…

영화 <서부전선>은 농사 짓다 끌려온 남한군과 탱크는 책으로만 배운 북한군이 전쟁의 운명이 달린 비밀문서를 두고 위험천만한 대결을 벌이는 내용이다. 1953년 휴전 3일전, 정해진 장소, 정해진 시간까지 비밀문서를 전달해야 하는 남한군 쫄병과 우연히 비밀문서를 손에 쥐게 된 북한군 쫄병이 서부전선에서 맞닥뜨리게 되면서 집으로 무사귀환 하기 위해 전쟁의 운명을 가를 각자의 미션을 수행하는 모습을 유쾌하고 감동적으로 그려냈다.

<서부전선>은 단순히 전쟁 영화에 머무르지 않고 두 쫄병이 집으로 돌아가기 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 미션을 수행하는 모습을 통해 위험천만한 대결의 재미와 감동을 함께 담아낸다. 특히 세대와 성별을 불문하고 누구나 느낄 수 있는 집과 가족에 대한 그리움을 ‘무사귀환’이라는 코드에 담아 유쾌한 웃음과 따뜻한 휴머니즘으로 무장했다. 이에 올 추석, 유일무이한 전 세대를 위한 종합선물세트 같은 영화로 가족, 형제, 인생의 소중한 의미를 그려내며 전 세대의 공감을 이끌어 낸다.
