YesAsia Editorial Description

Do Hong Kong musicals get much better than this? With its cast and crew picking up awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Music, Best Editing, Best Actress, and even a Special Award For Outstanding Performance from the Golden Horse Film Awards, The Love Eterne is in every sense a true classic of Chinese cinema. Released in 1963, this Shaw Brothers adaptation of the classic Chinese tale, "The Butterfly Lovers" stars Betty Loh Ti as Chu Ying Tai, an intelligent, but bored young woman who convinces her parents to let her disguise herself as a boy so she can receive a university education. On the road to school, she meets a boy named Liang Shan Po (Ivy Ling Po), and the two quickly become best friends. Over time, she falls in love with Shan Po, but is afraid to tell him her secret, for fear she'll be kicked out of school.

Three years pass, and when someone in the family takes ill, Ying Tai must return home. Shan Po accompanies her for part of the journey, so Ying Tai uses the opportunity to drop hints about her true identity. But ultimately, can't bring herself to confess her feelings for him. Instead, Ying Tai tells Shan Po of her fictional "twin sister" that she'd like him to meet! After she leaves, Shan Po eventually discovers the truth about Ying Tai and rushes to her hometown for a romantic reunion! One problem though - the family has already set her up with another suitor, and it's an arrangement she can't escape! With fate seemingly tearing them apart, what will become of the "Butterfly Lovers"? Find out in the poignant finale of The Love Eterne, a dreamy musical fantasy of love, tragedy, and bittersweet triumph!

The Ultimate "Huang Mei" Story Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
If you see one movie in the "Huang Mei" genre, this is the one! The movie encompasses excellent performances from veteran actress Betty Loh Ti and newcomer Ivy Ling Po. The musical scores are refreshing, catchy and contagious, even after 40 years. You just wanna sing-along, even if you don't know Mandarin. As to the plot/storyline, everyone in China knows the legend. This movie immortalizes the young lovers. Subtitles are available in various languages making the movie easy to follow.

Betty Loh Ti's wonderful Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is still THE ultimate movie of the "Huang Mei" genre. Almost everything was done to perfection, except for the the height problem between Betty Loh Ti and Ivy Ling Po. (This made Betty Loh Ti looked more like an older sister to Ivy Ling Po and I'm sure it worked against her in the long run). Who could not help liking Ivy Ling Po because she was so cute and loveable in this role. Besides that, she could act. Height and age problem aside, Betty Loh Ti also played her role to perfection. She gave a multi-layered performance and showed great skill as an actress. Her male impersonation was even more MALE than Ivy Ling Po, who would on a few occasion lapse into female gesture. It was rumored that Betty Loh Ti lost the Asian Movie Queen award by one vote. Well, what the heck. If Lin Dai could win movie queen with "Les Belles", I wouldn't put much value in how these awards are determined anyway. My mom still insists that Betty Loh Ti acted better than anyone else in the movie just judging by acting skills alone, so who am I to contradict my mom. I just recommend this movie to all.

A near perfect masterpiece !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Watched today, Betty Loh Ti who won the Golden Horse award was still as perfect and not outdated at all. All her scences from facial expressions to dody language is perfect. No one could be able to replace her in this role.
Ivy Ling Po, by contrasts was abnit over-acting in some scenes and may be more suitable for the theatre.
The songs are great too.

Again, this original made the Tsui Hark's remake looked silly.

love eterne is a masterpiece! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The Love Eterne is a wonderful, great movie. I loved the colors, sets, costumes, room interiors as well as the music and story. The walk through the countryside of the two lovers is visually beautiful, and so charming! I want to give this VCD as gifts for Christmas to all my friends and family. -Joe Roberts, Whitewater, Calif. USA.

The No. 1 Shaw Classic !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I recommend this film to everyone Chinese or foreigner if there must watch only one Chinese film.
Definitely Shaw Bros' best film, the director's as else well as Lok Dai and Ivy Ling Po, best songs of the genre too. Although this film brought Ling Po to fame, the already very popular then Lok Dai(Betty)stole all the scenes deserved the best actress award more than anyone in history. From beginning to end, female to male and back to female, every scene of her is flawless and memorable. Even watched today, her acting is still great. Anxious to see her in "Dreams of the Red Chamber". The songs by Ching Ting and Ling Po are all good. Watch out the male/female voices of Ching Ting.
Watch it every year !!
