YesAsia Editorial Description

Sammo Hung directs The Moon Warriors, an action-packed swordplay film starring the unbeatable trio of Andy Lau, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung! Andy Lau is Ah Fei, a rural villager who possesses tremendous swordplay skills. The country kid is called into action when a feud between the deposed Emperor (Kenny Bee) and his brother (Jie Lin) erupts. The Emperor charges Fei with escorting his future bride, Princess Yueh (Anita Mui), but minor affection begins to simmer between Fei and Princess Yueh. Meanwhile, the Emperor's bodyguard Hsien (Maggie Cheung) possesses similar unspoken feelings for her master, but her quiet personality hides greater depths. Plus there's Hai Wei, Ah Fei's pet killer whale, who appears on more than one occasion to save the day! With acrobatic, finely choreographed action sequences and numerous involving romances, The Moon Warriors is among the most entertaining - and surprising - fantasy swordplay films to be produced during the early nineties Hong Kong Cinema boom!

One of my faves Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Twenty years ago, director Sammo Hung's "The Moon Warriors" was among the first Hong Kong movies I'd seen. I was captivated by its eye-popping action and engaging story. Some of the film's imagery -- the bamboo trees slithering through the ground, the magnificent underground tomb, the impossible beauty of Maggie Cheung -- stayed with me through the years. Twenty years later, I am captivated all over again.

13th Prince Yen Shi Shan (Kenny Bee) has been deposed as emperor by the evil 14th Prince (Kelvin Wong) and now roams the countryside seeking to evade the dastardly usurper and his minions. Kindhearted and intrepid fisherman Ah Fei (Andy Lau) comes to the defense of the 13th Prince and his swordswoman Mo Xian Er (Maggie Cheung) when he sees that they are in jeopardy. Unbeknownst to the prince, Xian Er actually is an agent of the 14th Prince who seeks an opportunity to assassinate the 13th Prince, but she struggles with a growing affection and admiration for the nobility and courage of her intended target.

The noble prince sends humble Ah Fei and Xian Er on a mission to fetch his future bride Princess Yue Yar (Anita Mui) to him. Xian Er disappears and soon Ah Fei and the princess come under attack by a mysterious masked swordslinger. Ah Fei is grievously wounded, but the mystery assassin suffers a hand injury and must give up the fight. As the princess nurses Ah Fei back to health, a bond grows between them. When they meet the 13th Prince at the tomb, the princess faces a fateful choice, as does the now-exposed Xian Er. When the 14th Prince storms the tomb the stage is set for the ultimate showdown.

Gorgeous cinematography and lovely incidental music, plus a sweet song affectingly sung by Sally Yeh, make "The Moon Warriors" an aesthetic delight. Corey Yuen's swordfighting choreography dazzles. Perhaps the film's only false note is the inclusion of a killer whale as fisherman Ah Fei's BFF. There is no doubt that seeing Andy Lau playing with a giant whale makes for spectacular viewing, but it doesn't seem organic to the story. Nonetheless, "The Moon Warriors" provides a thrilling and enjoyable treat for the whole family.

There's Nothing Andy Can't Do! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First of all, I do not own the English dubbed version. Mine has subtitles -- hate English dubbed movies! And now for my review. I am a huge Andy Lau fan! I just discovered him a few months ago when I became aware of the excellence of Chinese cinema and music. I have many Andy Lau movies, music videos and cd's. Andy Lau can do absolutely everything and do them perfectly! He can sing beautifully, dance like a professional dancer, play a killer, a romantic hero, a geeky guy, a feudal fighter, kung-fu master and swordsman. He can ride a horse most impressively, make you laugh and cry with his superb acting talent and the list goes on and on. In this movie, he rides a whale! Yes, it's really him and he's really riding, swimming with and hugging a whale! America has no one who comes anywhere close to being his equal when it comes to talent. He's a genius in so many different areas. I sometimes wonder if Chinese directors and movie moguls realize the extent of his greatness or, because he does everything with such ease, they just take his talent for granted? This particular movie is a great adventure/love story. I won't describe the plot, etc. because other reviewers have done that. I just want to bring your attention to the multi-talent genius of Andy Lau. Check out some of his other movies, and you will soon understand why I am such a huge fan.

Killer Whale? Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Have an earlier US release/subtitled version of this & it remains a classic HK wire-action movie with speeded up fights but some impressive choreography. The characters are likable enough with the very youthful Andy Lau, late diva Anita Mui(who's character is a really annoying spoiled brat of a princess) & the young, minimal screen time Maggie Cheung. Much of the story seemed shallow with attempts to give the romance or tragedy some depth that are more appealing to teenie bop audiences than anything else. One question: What's up with the killer whale?
