YesAsia Editorial Description

TV series adapted from Jin Yong's novels have always been popular among TV fans. Among the different TV adaptations of The New Heaven Sword and the Dragon Sabre, the 1986 TVB version starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai is perhaps the best loved one. The producer picked Tony Leung, who was already quite popular in 1986, to star as an indecisive but kind-hearted young man who learns some powerful martial arts skills by accident. While he has no problems in fighting against the villains, he puts himself in great trouble in choosing among the three women he comes across. The then new actresses Kitty Lai, Sheren Tang, and Maggie Shiu portray these three women to perfection, each possessing a different charisma. Simon Yam, Dodo Cheng, and Kenneth Tsang's supporting performance is also indispensable to the success of this action packed drama, with fighting scenes choreographed by the famous Ching Siu Tung.

Ten years ago, a heroic couple (Simon Yam and Dodo Cheng) was kidnapped to a remote island to look for the Dragon Sabre. Now they return to mainland with their son Wuji (Tony Leung), and all the swordsmen are after them for the legendary weapon. The couple commits suicide to uphold their honor, leaving Wuji an orphan to adventure in the martial arts world alone...

Excellent Series! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I bought this set because it was the sequel to the Return of the Condor Heroes as well as to fill in the blanks of the Jet Li movie, Kung Fu Cult Master. I found the series very entertaining and the cheesy special effects didn't bother me because I grew up watching the other two of the series. The characters were well developed and I actually couldn't stop watching it because I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. Tony Leung did an great job as the lead character and the writing portrayed him as an upright, no nonsense kind of guy. When I compared the series with the Kung Fu Cult Master, it filled in all of the blanks left by the movie, albeit the approaches were different. Character development for all of the major characters was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this series for the first time.

Best Version of Dragon Sabre Ever Made Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is my favorite version of the Dragon Sabre. Great casts and storyline. The new version(s) that were re-made by China in recent years are horrible compared to this one. If you want to watch the best version of this epic movie, this is the one. Too bad TVB don't make these kind of movies anymore for years.

Better than I thought Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I got this show simply because it is famous. I am not a real Kung Fu fan . I saw a previous version before but
I really could not quite get into the story.

I got this version in August, 2009. I made a couple of attempts to watch but I had to put it down. Very hard
to get into the story. I made a final attempt this month and it clicked. After researching online, I was able to
apreciate the song/music , and the Kung Fu fighting.

But, I think the whole story came alive when the real love of his love appeares. She brightens up the story.
She is smart and good looking. Suddenely , I was able to sit still for longer periods of time and finish the story
within a week or so. I have never seen Lai Mei Han's work before but I really like her now.

Not disappointed! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I bought this DVD for my hubby's birthday (he is Australian) so that he could enjoys one of my favourite stories.
We both enjoyed the series a lot, hubby was actually thinking about re-watching some of the episodes!!!

Things we don't like about the series:
- hee hee hee, the 80's special effects are laughable, when the boat to Ice-Fire Island crashed... it was the camera rocking instead of the boat!!! It's very funny and we have a good laugh;
- ooooh, and when Wuji encountered the gorilla in the cave... OMG! I am sure they can do better than that silly costume! (This is the most embrassing moment for me... being a HK girl! How can TVB be so tacky!!!)
- the subtitle overall is great, except I hope they would be a bit more creative when translating characters' names than just using 'pinyin'. For a non-Chinese audience, all the characters' names sound very similar and are quite difficult to follow! For example, the Graphic Novel of 'Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre' by Mr Ma Wing-Shing translated the Ermei's sect leader as 'Priestess No Mercy' rather than 'Priestess MieJue'. Now, No Mercy is much more memorable for the non-Chinese audience and also allow an insight to the character!

All in all though, if you can remember that it is a 1980s local production (try to compare that to 'Bold and the Beautiful' or some other cheap sitcoms in the same era) - you will enjoy the series. The acting is great and the story is excellent. And finally, don't expect the battle scenes to be anything like the books... :)
