Created in 1988 by Headgear, Patlabor is a police and crime procedural revolving around the Tokyo Metropolitan Police whose officers pilot mecha called Patlabors. The franchise includes manga, light novels, an anime series and multiple animated films, most notably Oshii Mamoru's 1989 classic Patlabor: The Movie. In 2014 and 2015, the Patlabor universe was revived in an ambitious live-action project titled The Next Generation -Patlabor- which consists of a 13-episode series split theatrically into seven parts and a feature film. A sequel to the original Patlabor timeline, The Next Generation is set in 2013 after the end of the Babylon Project. Division 2 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police struggles to stay afloat amid budget cuts and Labors falling increasingly out of use, though Labor crime continues to be high. Mano Erina (Tag) leads Special Vehicle Section 2's third generation as pilot Izuminio Akira.

Labor: A robot specifically designed for heavy industry work.The rise of Labors sparked a revolution in industry, but also in criminal activities as well. To combat these new Labor’s crimes, the police therefore created a special unit: The Patrol Labor Known as the Special Vehicles Section 2 (SV2). And thus, this is the birth of “Patlabor”. Setting in 21st century, Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s SV2 so-called Patlabor still operates Labors, but it is considered that Patlabor is no longer necessary because of its cost and care. SV2 Division 1 has disbanded. The third generation Division 2 is barely surviving.
