YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on a short story by Hwang Soon Won, The Old Potter is the latest Korean classic to be remastered for DVD release by the Korean Film Archive. Directed by Choi Ha Won, the 1969 picture is considered one of Korea's most important literary films. The tragic tale of love, desire, and despair stars late legend Hwang Hae and actress Yoon Jeong Hee, who recently made her screen comeback in Lee Chang Dong's Poetry.

Old potter Song (Hwang Hae) was living a lonely life by himself until the day he rescues Ok Su (Yoon Jeong Hee), a young woman he discovers on the verge of death in a snow-covered field. They get married and have a son, but one day Ok Su's ex-boyfriend Seok Hyun (Nam Koong Won) shows up. They run off in the middle of the night, leaving Song in despair and desperation. Song tries to continue making pottery to support the family, but he is unable to continue without Ok Su.

Better to have loved and lost? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Old Potter" turns a simple tale of love and loss into a memorably melodramatic tragedy. The elderly Song (Hwang Hae) is an exacting potter who leads a solitary existence. One wintry day he stumbles upon the unconscious and frostbitten body of a beautiful young woman (Yoon Jeong Hee). Song brings the woman back to his rustic home, where he nurses her back to health. As Song rubs warmth back into the unclad body of the unconscious woman, he takes much more than a clinical interest in the experience. When the woman recovers, we learn that she is Ok Su and that she became lost in the woods while searching for the man to whom she was betrothed.

The film then skips ahead seven years. Old Song and Ok Su are married and have an adorable little boy. Song almost can't believe his good fortune, that in his dotage he should be blessed with a lovely bride and happy child. Feeling confident of his future, Song hires an assistant, a handsome young man named Seok Hyun (Nam Koong Won). Unbeknownst to Song, Seok Hyun happens to be Ok Su's former boyfriend. Seok Hyun has spent the last seven years hunting for Ok Su and now tries to persuade her to return to him. Ok Su is torn between her duty to the old man and her yearning for the virility of her long-lost lover. The consequences of her fateful decision prove profound.

The story is told in classic melodrama form with emotions played to the hilt. Director Choi Ha Won chose to highlight the sensual side of the tale, an aspect which apparently is absent in Hwang Soon Won's original short story. From a dramatic perspective, this decision makes sense; it heightens the film's tragic aspect by giving us a protagonist whose reckless love of physical beauty proves to be his downfall. The image quality of this Korean Film Archives release is flawed, but quite watchable. Highly recommended.
