YesAsia Editorial Description

Ma Dong Seok (Train to Busan) and Yoon Kye Sang (Poongsan) face off in the rip-roaring crime action blockbuster The Outlaws, which is inspired by a real-life turf war that rattled Seoul in 2007. Known as the Heuksapa Incident, the gang war involved a crime syndicate in Garibong, a neighborhood populated by many ethnic Koreans from China. Yoon Kye Sang makes a gritty turn as the notorious mobster from China, while Ma Dong Seok plays the angry cop who is determined to take him down. The Outlaws won writer-director Kang Yoon Sung the Best New Director prize at the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards and the 37th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.

Jang Chen (Yoon Kye Sang), a seasoned gangster from Harbin, China, arrives in Seoul and soon single-handedly muscles his way to the top. He takes over the Venom gang and ruthlessly takes down other bosses to seize control of the Garibong neighborhood. However, tough detective Ma Seok Do (Ma Dong Seok) is just as willing to use his fists to clean up his district.

Ma Dong Seok vs Gangsters
Helmed by first-time writer-director Kang Yoon Sung, The Outlaws is based on a real-life gang war and police mop-up operation that occurred in Seoul's de facto Chinatown district of Garibong in 2007. The real-world origin of the story adds to the grit and appeal of this no-nonsense crime action thriller.

In a role that is basically tailor-made for him, Ma Dong Seok plays tough-as-nails, straight-talking violent-crimes detective Ma Seok Do, who really does not appreciate the sudden nuisance of a turf war breaking out in his district. Cut from the old-school fabric of street-smart policing, Detective Ma maintains familiar relations with locals and mob bosses, and doesn't hesitate to break rules or slap uncooperative goons around when the occasion calls for it.

On the other side of the ring, Yoon Kye Sang speaks little and glares a lot as an unflinchingly brutal gangster from China who has an axe and uses it liberally. Yoon isn't quite at the level of Kim Yoon Seok in The Yellow Sea, but he delivers a suitably intense and inscrutable performance as the murderous Jang Chen who arrives in Korea and promptly usurps an established gang in the most direct way possible – killing the boss and everyone else in his way.

The Outlaws isn't here to offer nuance or character development. The violent and unrepentant actions of Jang Chen and his cronies feed into the notorious stereotypes of Korean-Chinese gangsters, and Detective Ma is basically immovable brawn as the cop who gets things done. These clear-cut characters and conflicts set up The Outlaws for very efficient storytelling that is refreshingly free of big statements or mawkish sentiments. Neither the hero nor the antagonist gets saddled with unnecessary relationships, backstories or speeches. Laced with both brutal violence and glib humor, the tightly paced showdown between cops and gangsters plays out with an effective combination of police procedural, gangland drama and jolting action.

Thanks to its box office success to the tune of over 6.8 million admissions, a sequel for The Outlaws was recently announced. I, for one, look forward to more of Ma Dong Seok casually roughing up bad guys while drawling out put-downs.

Mr Nice Guy Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I think Korea has got it down when it comes to gangsters flicks. They've always showed the power of gangs. From respect to fear. Well lets not forget no matter how much power they have. The law is around and respect can turn to betrayal because money, power, and surviving is more important.

Watching a lot of Korean gangster films. People will wonder why they rarely use guns. It's because in Korea they don't have guns or a law for guns so even the police use clubs and what not. Honestly using blunt or sharp weapons makes the movie more real and gruesome. Tho very similar to Hong Kong triad films. The brutality Korean movies take it is another level. It feels very real and it makes you kind of close your eyes yet leaving a slit open to keep watching. They also show the shadiness and classic scenes with hostess clubs.

I may have talked more about the genre over the actual movie, but I don't want to spoil anything. It shows corruption to doing your job as the law to protect the law as well as yourself. The action as I've said is cut throat brutal. Ma Dong Seok puts up a great act as the corrupt detective upholding the law when needed but falling easily to temptation while maintaining his composure. Yoon Kye Sang is pure evil. I haven't seen a gangster take over like his since watching Brother(Takeshi Kitano) except Yoon Kye Sang role feels more psycho.

If you do check this out. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I watched it twice in a short time.
