YesAsia Editorial Description
After a night of heavy drinking together, the already married policeman spends the night with Ji Sook. But as it turns out, Ji Sook has experience with this sort of situation, as she has just broken off her affair with another married man, a decision that has left her lonely and upset. The film's second half focuses on Sang Kwon (Baek Jong Hak, A Moment To Remember), the married university professor formerly attached to Ji Sook. It seems that Sang Kwon has also decided to visit Kangwon Province, but the two former lovers narrowly miss one another during their travels. Both of them, however, do end up getting involved with a terrible tragedy, one that might change both of them forever! Can Ji Sook and Sang Kwon's relationship be repaired? Or will they end up leaving the mountains of Kangwon Province unhappier than ever before?

Don't blame it on Kangwon
One could characterize "The Power of Kangwon Province" as the prototypical Hong Sang Soo movie; its story features his usual themes of empty sex and alienation and is told in his customary glancing, elliptical style. The film is told in two intersecting parts, the first follows three female friends who spend a brief holiday at a seaside town in mountainous Kangwon Province. The women meet a helpful policeman (Kim Soo Suk) and one of them, Ji Sook (Ou Yun Hong), strikes up an intimate relationship with him, although he has acknowledged that he is married. The film's second part shows two male buddies on a trip to the same resort town. The men hike in the mountains, then dally with hookers. One of them, serial adulterer Sang Kwon (Baek Jong Hak), appears almost inadvertently to be responsible for the death of a woman he meets at the resort. Later we learn that Ji Sook and Sang Kwon had had an adulterous relationship. When Sang Kwon returns to the city they meet again.
The story is told in a naturalistic, matter-of-fact style which heightens the discomfort of seeing these characters behave so badly. The movie even includes an apparent murder for which one of its central characters seems partly responsible, but the dramatic impact of that event intentionally is undercut by the film's flat off-handed style. The death is just one more unintended consequence of Sang Kwon's recklessness. The film concludes with an image which poetically captures the empty, aimless existence into which these characters, by their 'mistakes', have trapped themselves. The wonder (or perhaps the horror) of director Hong Sang Soo's filmmaking is that he makes these warped lives seem so normal. |
