Tony Leung Chiu Wai (Lust, Caution) and Zhou Xun (The Message) return to period spy thriller territory in The Silent War, the latest blockbuster from Hong Kong filmmakers Alan Mak and Felix Chong. The writer-directors of Overheard and Infernal Affairs skillfully depict the suspense and intrigues of the covert battles of espionage and counter-espionage between the Kuomintang and the Communists in early 1950s China. Adapted from an award-winning novel by Mai Jia ("China's Dan Brown"), the story follows Leung's blind man who partners with Zhou's secret agent to intercept enemy codes with his extraordinary hearing. Also featuring Mavis Fan, Wang Xuebing, Dong Yong, Carrie Ng, and Pal Sinn, the film received four nominations at the 49th Golden Horse Awards, including Best Supporting Actress (for Fan) and three technical categories.

After the civil war, countless spies of the defeated Kuomintang are still operating in Mainland China, secretly plotting to revolt against the new regime. The Communists' military intelligence agency "701 Bureau" is set up to carry out surveillance on enemy communications. But when the secret channels they've been tapping suddenly vanish without a trace one day, the 701 Bureau must recruit new talents to help its cause. Agent Zhang Xuening (Zhou Xun) is ordered to go to Shanghai to enlist the service of piano tuner Luo San'er, but she finds that the one who possesses astonishing aural abilities is actually his blind sidekick He Bing (Tony Leung). At 701, Bing manages to pick up the enemies' encrypted messages in the airwaves, while developing entangled feelings for Xuening and decoding specialist Shen Jing (Mavis Fan).

After the establishment of People’s Republic of China, the People’s Liberation Army, set up an intelligence agency called 701 to fight against them. 701 keeps tapping their foes’ secret radio channels to monitor their moves and collect intelligence. One day, all of a sudden, all the secret radio channels seem to disappear without a trace. Xuening is sent to Shanghai to seek for worthy who gets superb aural comprehension. She targets Luo Saner at first, but it turns out she brings Luo’s personal assistant. He Bing to report duty as she realizes this blind man is the one she looks for. Surprisingly, he rediscovers 120 secret frequencies that once are lost within just few days. He Bing has feeling for Xuening gradually. Nevertheless, He knows that he is not good enough for her so he keeps it all to himself. He then falls in love with another female colleague Chen Jing, and gets married later. Xuening introduces a doctor to he Bing as their wedding present. The doctor did some check up on He Bing and tells him that he can regain his sight after surgery. He Bing is convinced by Xuening to have the surgery and it successfully fixes his eyes. He Bing’s hearing ability, unfortunately, is becoming very poor. Though he gets to listen to enemy’s channels, but he can’t understand the meaning of it at all. That, as a result, gets Zhang in peril….
