YesAsia Editorial Description

Chinese films rarely get as big as Sorcerer and the White Snake, from actor-turned-producer Yang Zi and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon producer Chui Po Chu. The latest retelling of The Legend of the White Snake, the US$25 million Sorcerer stars Eva Huang (Kung Fu Hustle) as a lovelorn demon and international superstar Jet Li as a Buddhist monk determined to keep natural law in order at any cost. Hong Kong-based writers Tsang Kan Cheong (Shaolin Soccer) and Szeto Cheuk Han (Mr. Vampire), as well as veteran action director Ching Siu Tung (Swordsman) bring together spectacular fantasy action, state-of-the-art special effects, and a stirring tale of forbidden love for the perfect Chinese blockbuster.

In addition to Huang and Li, the stellar all-star cast of Sorcerer also includes Raymond Lam (Jade and the Pearl), Charlene Choi (Twins Effect), Wen Zhang (Ocean Heaven), as well as Vivian Hsu, Miriam Yeung, Chapman To, and Jiang Wu in special cameos. After its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, The Sorcerer and the White Snake was released during the intensely competitive National Day holiday in China and quickly became one of the highest-grossing Chinese films of the year.

Snake demons Bai Suzhen (Eva Huang) and Qingqing (Charlene Choi) live in the forest with other animal demons. One day, Suzhen plays a trick on herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam) and causes him to nearly drown. After saving his life, Suzhen realizes that she has fallen in love with Xu Xian, a fact that will not sit well with stern Buddhist monk Fahai (Jet Li). A righteous sorcerer who strongly believes in observing the law of nature, Fahai spends his days capturing demons who have invaded the human world with his trusty disciple Neng Ren (Wen Zhang). When Fahai discovers that Xu Xian has married Suzhen without knowing her true identity, Fahai is determined to keep the two worlds apart - an action that raises the terrifying wrath of Suzhen.

Professional Review of "The Sorcerer And The White Snake (2011) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)"

December 14, 2011

This professional review refers to The Sorcerer And The White Snake (2011) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Sorcerer and the White Snake has been one of the more hotly anticipated Chinese releases of 2011, and it's not hard to see why, given the talent in front of and behind the camera. Boasting an impressive US$25 million budget and premiering at the Venice Film Festival, the fantasy production stars Jet Li in the lead as a Buddhist monk, butting heads with Eva Huang (Kung Fu Hustle) and Twins' Charlene Choi as snake demons, with Raymond Lam (Jade and the Pearl) and Wen Zhang (Ocean Heaven) as the two young men caught in the middle, plus cameos by from the likes of Vivian Hsu, Miriam Yeung, Chapman To and Jiang Wu. Directed by legendary helmer and action choreographer Ching Siu Tung, responsible for numerous genre classics including Swordsman, A Chinese Ghost Story and others, the prestigious film was produced by Yang Zi and Chui Po Chu (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Confucius) and written by Hong Kong scribes Tsang Kan Cheong (Shaolin Soccer) and Szeto Cheuk Han (Mr. Vampire).

The film follows Eva Huang as white snake demon Bai Suzhen, who one day when fooling around on a mountain spots and takes a liking to mortal herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam). Saving his life after green snake demon Qingqing (Charlene Choi) plays a trick on him, Suzhen finds herself falling for the kindly man, and takes on human form so that they can live together as man and wife. In doing so, she meets with the disapproval of Buddhist monk Fahai (Jet Li), who spends his days hunting demons along with hapless helper Neng Ren (Wen Zhang). When Suzhen refuses to reveal her true identity to her unknowing husband, the monk takes steps to try and keep them apart, enraging the demon and setting tragic events in motion.

Drawing from the same ancient Chinese folk tale, Sorcerer and the White Snake unsurprisingly has more than a little in common with Tsui Hark's 1993 classic fantasy Green Snake. However, Ching Siu Tung's take on the myth is a far more commercial blockbuster type affair, aiming to cover as many bases and achieve as wide an appeal as possible - which it certainly succeeded in, having ranked as one of the biggest Chinese box office hits of the year. To this end, the film packs in a great deal of action, romance, comedy and even family friendly cutesy talking animals, all brought to life with a non-stop parade of computer generated special effects. Thankfully, Ching Siu Tung is an old hand at this kind of thing, and he prevents the film from ever getting too scattershot, focusing mainly on the unconventional romance between Suzhen and Xu Xian, or more specifically on her desire to try and live as a normal human. Worked into this are a number of different subplots, including some daftness involving her animal spirit family, a demon plague that strikes a nearby village, and Neng Ren's clash with a bat demon and his budding relationship with Qingqing. There's certainly a lot going on throughout, and this helps to keep things interesting and moving along at a decent pace.

Sadly, despite the generous budget, the special effects might politely be described as being of variable quality, ranging from some nicely done fantasy landscapes through to some hilariously awful looking demons, most notably the half snake bodies sported by Eva Huang and Charlene Choi, which float most unconvincingly in the air and seem to be entirely unconnected to their heads and chests. Still, the film definitely wins points for effort, with Ching Siu Tung showing a great deal of imagination in creating the film's magical world and orchestrating some ambitious large scale set pieces, especially during the final act. These provide an often exciting injection of epic spectacle, and the film does feature a great many visually striking moments, enough so to help overlook some of its shoddy computer work. There's a fair amount of martial arts action involved, primarily between Jet Li and Eva Huang, and though this mainly involves the two flying through the air rather than getting down to actual fisticuffs, it again works well to keep things entertaining.

A lot of the film's overall sense of fun comes from the cast, all of whom are on good form. Although Jet Li doesn't have a great deal to do in acting terms, he slips into the older grumpy sifu role with great ease, and is very enjoyable in the role, bringing back fond memories for genre fans of Lam Ching Ying and Wu Ma as he stomps around advising anyone and everyone that humans and demons don't mix. Eva Huang is surprisingly good as the female lead, offering a slightly more complicated white snake, lovesick, arrogant and vengeful rather than the sappy creature than might have been expected. As a result, her relationship with Raymond Lam is oddly affecting despite his rather bland nice guy persona, and the film is reasonably moving towards the end. Charlene Choi and Wen Zhang both manage a few sparks of their own in roles which largely amount to comic relief, with their bouts of flirting and mischief adding a few playful laughs along the way.

All of this comes together pretty well, and Sorcerer and the White Snake is definitely one of the better big budget Chinese fantasy themed films of the last couple of years. Surviving some bizarrely lacklustre special effects work thanks to some solid handling and creative action sequences by Ching Siu Tung, the film is an enjoyable genre outing that benefits from a fine cast, and in particular from the presence of Jet Li, who despite getting visibly older is still great value on screen.

CGI-heavy "Green Snake" remake Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
For American fans of '90s Hong Kong cinema, Tsui Hark's "Green Snake" was one of the great touchstones. Not everyone loved it, but it generated a strong reaction and the appeal of Joey Wang and Maggie Cheung in the lead roles was undeniable. One assumes that the makers of "The Sorcerer and the White Snake" figured that they could cash in on the landmark status of "Green Snake" by remaking it with state of the art special effects and currently popular movie stars. The result is oddly inconsistent.

The story should be familiar to any fans of the genre: Two snake demon sisters enter the human realm, in which they yearn to taste human love, even if it costs them some of their demonic powers. Standing in the way of the realization of their dream is an unbending Buddhist master (here played effectively by Jet Li), who seeks to drive them from this world. Eva Huang's White Snake saves a handsome young physician (Raymond Lam) from drowning and, in doing so, falls irrevocably in love with him. Her Green Snake sister (Charlene Choi) strikes up a teasing relationship with the Buddhist master's acolyte (Wen Zhang), which grows into greater affection when the lad, after battling bat demons, begins a shocking transformation.

The performances are as good as such a special effects-driven movie allows and the relationships are affectingly presented. The CGI effects, however, are remarkably spotty, with some being more distractingly cheesy than those in Tsui Hark's version. Moreover, so much time ends up being devoted to those effects that the charmingly comic Charlene Choi-Wen Zhang relationship gets lost in the sound and fury. The inclusion in the film of cartoonish talking animals seems entirely out of place. Their presence made me wonder just what audience the filmmakers were seeking for their movie.

"The Sorcerer and the White Snake" is worth a look (and won't consume much of your time; the film credits start rolling after only 88 minutes), but my heart still belongs to "Green Snake".

Totally awesome...! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a story of the "Romeo & Juliet" kind albeit with a fantasy twist and a bittersweet ending. Iconic international superstar Jet Li plays the role of a stern but compassionate master monk battling demons that devour humans. The master tries to save a naive young TCM physician from a thousand year-old White Snake, who had evolved to become a beautiful woman (played by the lovely Eva Huang from Stephen Chow's Kungfu Hustle).

The movie is simply fantastic, as it features massive battles between the master monk and the demons that conjure up forces of nature, including super storms and a huge tsunami! A must-see for fans of this genre (e.g. Forbidden Kingdom, Storm Warriors, Reign of Assassins). The stellar cast also stars Wen Zhang (from Stephen Chow's absolutely brilliant prequel of Journey to the West) and Charlene Choi (from Hong Kong's popular singing duo Twins).

This movie gets 10/10 for awesome CGI wrapped around an ancient fairytale, which breathes life into the story.

It's not a Jet Li Film, whats up with the Hate? Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Look I like Jet Li too but, just cause he's in this movie doesn't make it a Jet Li movie. First of all yes the computer graphics was never a strong point in chinese movies (many examples...do I need to actually give a few.) And yeah it does look very gimmicky at times for such a high (for chinese films) budget movie. If your looking for cutting edge graphics go elsewhere, cause even though 90% of the fights is purely made up of graphics It may not look as good as it could be.

What I actually liked about the movie was the storyline, it can be pretty captivating at times and off put in others. Usually cause of the acting. Eva (White Snake) the lead actress did fairly, sometimes its right on the money and other times it can be well, better? Don't know how else to say it. Maybe it's just how it was directed. But, decent nonetheless and that's saying a lot since I've seen many movies lately and this was pretty refreshing if not better than what I expected and I didn't expect much to begin with since I don't like the casting very much. Raymond Lam to me played this oh i'm so innocent and pure. please don't rap~e me i'm waiting for my true love type of guy. And it got in my nerves from time to time. His acting here was less than fair, reason was most likely cause I don't see him playing this part well. It just doesn't work with his facial features in my opinion. As for Charlene, well. whatever really...lol...its ok...i'm being nice on that...nothing really noteworthy to write on.

Conclusion, watch it with someone. Preferably your girl/guy. It tries to spin it all in one with the Graphics (GUY) and love story (Girl) and makes it into a couples movie. It's ok but there's better out there.

Graphics: 2.5/5 (sometimes its just what the ef were they thinking kind of moments)
Sound: 4/5 (I really enjoyed the background music and ending music was appropriately well done)
Acting: 3/5 (It's better than the graphics, but don't expect a grammy)
Story: 3.5/5 (I enjoyed the story, I think it needed more length for more in depth understanding of the characters psyche) (like Jet Li's disciple, He shows up the first quarter of the movie (maybe more) and he vanishes into thin air until the end.

Overall: 3.25 (it's alright, it's a rent for most)

very sad.... Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
I am very disappointing of this movie. It is pretty much a worst film and surprisingly star the great actor JET LI. But still don't make it good. Even though there are beautiful girls. The acting by the 2 lovely actress were bad. They don't make as good movie like in the 90's anymore. Example, joey wang, leslie cheung, brigette lin and so forth. This movie don't have the feeling of big budget. Don't think I would watch it twice.
