YesAsia Editorial Description
The daughter of the owner of a small-town bakery in Kaohsiung, Hsiao Ping (Michelle Chen) has grown up together with baker Gao Bing (Chen Han Dian), who considers Hsiao Ping his future bride. But Hsiao Ping actually has a dream that doesn't belong here, so for the last six years, she has refused to say yes to Gao Bing's numerous proposals. One day, a handsome Eurasian celebrity chef named Brad (Anthony Neely) comes to the peaceful town in search of inspirations, and finds his late mother's favorite bread at the bakery. Brad is immediately smitten with Hsiao Ping, who is also fond of him and arranges for him to become Gao Bing's apprentice. Gao Bing, desperately vying for his goddess's affection, challenges Brad to a baking showdown. Which will Hsiao Ping choose - the familiar Taiwanese taste or the endearing European sensation?

Despite this being the age of globalization, Cape No. 7 taught the Taiwanese film industry one important lesson: localization sells. Its record-breaking box office grosses told filmmakers that Taiwan audiences don't only want big-budget blockbusters filled with spectacle. Sometimes, they too want films about Taiwanese values and Taiwanese characters. In other words, they want films that they can call their own.
The Soul of Bread rides that bandwagon. Even though its core story is a romantic triangle between small-town bakery chef Gao Bing (Chen Han Dian), his longtime girlfriend Hsiao Ping (Michelle Chen), and hunky world-renowned foodie Brad (Anthony Neely), much of the film's charm come from its small-town setting and its supporting cast. Directors Sean Kao (remaking his television film) and Lin Chun Yang create a world filled with endearing characters like Hsiao Ping's father (the bakery owner who's also the town DJ), a sunglasses-donning policeman, and neighbors who use Brad's bread as aphrodisiac. This is what elevates The Soul Of Bread above other Taiwanese idol romcoms. With its flawed storytelling and lack of any real dramatic weight, The Soul of Bread may not be a particularly memorable film. However, it also manages to tell a story with real dilemmas (the comfort of home vs. the adventure of ambition, Chen Han Dian vs. Anthony Neely), the production has a layer of polish, and it's charming without going over-the-top like idol dramas often do. Even more comforting to Taiwan film fans, The Soul of Bread feels like a local film - though 98% of Anthony Neely's dialogue is in English - without feeling like it's desperately pandering to local audiences. It showcases a lot of local charm, but it also tells a universal story that overseas audiences can relate to. After a longtime slump, it's good to see Taiwan commercial cinema starting to find a unique formula for success. It's easy to dismiss commercial films like Cape No. 7 and The Soul of Bread for being light fluff, but what's so bad about Taiwan-made films that can bring audiences back into Taiwan cinemas? |
