YesAsia Editorial Description

A popular Chinese romance gets adapted to the glorious big screen in The Three Smiles, a Huangmei opera that's both charming and timeless. Ivy Ling Bor has the gender-bending lead role as Tang Bohu, a famous scholar who masquerades as peasant Hua An to worm his way into the life of pretty maiden Autumn Fragrance (Li Jing), who resides in the court of Lady Hua, wife of the Grand Tutor. Bohu's desire is spurred by the eponymous "three smiles", which were smiles delivered to Bohu by Autumn Fragrance on three separate occasions. However, once he enters the court of Lady Hua, it's not so easy for a peasant to gain the notice of a maiden! Featuring charming Mandarin songs and gorgeous costumes and set designs, The Three Smiles was a major Hong Kong Cinema hit and one of the most beloved films to emerge from the Shaw Brothers vaults. In 1993, the same story behind The Three Smiles served as the blueprint for the blockbuster nonsense comedy Flirting Scholar, starring Stephen Chow and Gong Li.

Director: Yueh Fung

The "Huangmei Opera" folk opera once constituted the most popular trend in Mandarin musicals, and this is not only the last great one, but perhaps the most memorable retelling of one of China's most popular romances. In a gender-bendering turn, Shaw's supreme star, Ivy Ling seduce the sprite-like servant, played by "Baby Movie Queen" Li Ching, the youngest star to ever be named Best Actress. The result was number four hit of 1969.

Best Huangmei Folk Opera!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It's the best Huangmei Opera!! I had watched it 6 times and loved every part of it. Beautiful music and songs, the superb colour and costumes and of course, the lovely Ivy Ling Po and Li Jing who looked great and acted so well together! The script was well presented too, making the story very fluent. Ivy as a male impersonator looked so cute and handsome and definitely had given me 3 smiles in my sleep! I am so happy to have owned 2 VCDs and a DVD of this movie. I am sure they will keep me entertained forever. Don't miss this supreme Huangmei Opera!

A must see movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie is so funny and is very poetic. The story itself has been well known to Chinese people especially the elder generation. If you enjoy traditional Huangmei opera music, please don't miss this one. I can't wait for "the Mermaid" from queen lichin and Ivy linpo to restore and release.

"The Three Smiles," Beautiful, Beautiful and Beaut Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie gave me three big smiles!!! First smile: Beautiful music. Second smile: Beautiful photography and color. Third smile: Beautiful paintings on the interior walls. Ms. Ling Po is in high form!!! I loved this movie!!! The music seemed more traditional chinese to me, which I love!!! Now, I hope for the sound track music C.D. to become available!!! Infact, I would love music C.D.'s of the sound tracks of most of Shaw Brothers movies, especially the Huangmei Operas!!! "The Three Smiles" brings joy to the heart!!! Enjoy!!!

Great performance by Ling Po Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
The movie is excellent...good plot and strong cast. As usual, Movie Queen Ling Po gave her top performance as a male scholar.

The only disappointment was the sound...the volume is a little low - especially during songs, which defeated the most important aspect of a Huangmei Opera film!

Nostalgia Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This opus is obviously more successful than Bribe Napping, the leading characters are more seductive. There's been a slight improvement compared to the first releases since December, this time the sound engineer has made an effort to work the audio 5.1 out, although squawking the hearing is more comfortable than audio 1.0, phew...you would be relieved to learn that ! Despite a light trembling of image, the color is beautiful. The movie was finely restored. A progress has been made, it's a good sign.
