YesAsia Editorial Description
Miyazaki Hayao and Studio Ghibli pay tribute to dreamers everywhere with The Wind Rises, the master director's final feature film. Loosely based on both the life of aircraft engineer Horikoshi Jiro and a short story by writer Hori Tatsuo, The Wind Rises is a fictional account of Horikoshi's life, from his days as a dreamer to creating the renowned Zero fighter plane. At once a moving journey about the pursuit of dream and a bittersweet love story, the film draws parallels between Horikoshi's life and Miyazaki's own distinguished career, showing the wonders of creation and the price creators pay for pursuing their aspirations. Winning accolades around the world, including a nomination for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards, The Wind Rises is also the top grossing Japanese film of 2013.
Ever since he was a young boy, Horikoshi Jiro (voiced by director Anno Hideaki) has always been passionate about aviation, dreaming of flying in the sky with a plane that he created. The Wind Rises follows his journey, from being a small-time engineer in a field dominated by western countries to creating the renowned Zero fighter. Almost equal in Jiro's love for aviation is his love for his wife Naoko, whom he had helped many years ago during the Great Kanto Earthquake. However, Jiro eventually must make the choice between fulfilling his dream and tending to his gravely ill wife.

A master filmmaker's swan song
"The Wind Rises" apparently is the great Miyazaki Hayao's directorial swan song. If it is, then Miyazaki made an odd choice of subject matter for his final film. This might be the first film he created that tells the life story of a real person, although it takes great liberties with it. And it is a film unlikely to interest small children. On the other hand, it is a typical Miyazaki film in its gorgeous hand-drawn animation, lovely film score, and interesting, well-observed characters.
"The Wind Rises" tells the story of Horikoshi Jiro, perhaps Japan's greatest aircraft designer. It begins when Jiro is a dreamy child, lost in his fantasies of flight. It shows him traveling to university to study aeronautical engineering. On the way, the train in which he travels encounters the Great Kanto Earthquake, he helps to rescue an injured woman, and, in the course of doing so, he meets Naoko, who years later will become his bride. After university, he is employed by Mitsubishi, where he is assigned to create a new fighter plane and succeeds in developing a plane -- the Zero -- that becomes the state of the art. One of the film's marvels is how it makes vivid Jiro's creative thinking processes. Never before has engineering been made so exciting or so beautiful! The film's rich human dimension resides in the supportive friendships Jiro forms through his work, his growing love for Naoko, and Naoko's brave battle with tuberculosis (a disease she never contracted in real life). Strangely, the film barely touches upon Jiro's feelings about the fact that his dreams of developing great aircraft are realized in the creation of instruments of death. The film doesn't mention that Jiro believed that Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was a terrible, foolhardy mistake that likely would lead to Japan's destruction. Miyazaki Hayao surely feels a kinship with the genius that was Horikoshi Jiro; that kinship is eloquently expressed in Jiro's sympathetic portrayal in this fine film. Throughout Miyazaki's career, he has used flight-related themes as expressions of creative freedom and the realization of dreams. Hence, it makes sense that he would end his career with a movie about an aviation pioneer. Some might wish that he had chosen one without Horikoshi's ties to Japan's expansionist past. |
