YesAsia Editorial Description

You can run from your crimes, but you can never escape the watchful eyes of Detective Kaga Kyoichiro. After the popular television adaptations of Shinzanmono and Akai Yubi, the inquisitive crime fighter from Higashino Keigo's popular novel series now hits the big screen with Wings of the Kirin. In his latest case, the stern crime solver must dig out the truth in a seemingly open-and-shut case involving a stabbing at the famous Nihonbashi. After his popular turn as Kaga on the two previous television adaptations, Abe Hiroshi plays the brilliant detective for the third time in Kirin. In addition to the return of regulars Mizobata Junpei (as Kaga's cousin/partner), Kuroki Meisa (as a local reporter), and Yamazaki Tsutomu (as Kaga's ailing father), Abe is also joined by a new supporting cast that includes Aragaki Yui (Hanamizuki), Tanaka Rena (The Tale of Genji), and Nakai Kiichi (Once in a Blue Moon).

Kaga Kyoichiro (Abe Hiroshi) is brought in to investigate a case of a salaryman (Nakai Kiichi) found dead on Tokyo's Nihonbashi. After the man's co-worker was found hit by a truck after fleeing the crime scene, the police think that they have an open-and-shut case on their hands. However, the ever-observant Kaga thinks that there's more to what's on the surface and begins to investigate deeper, from the dead man's son to the suspect's girlfriend (Aragaki Yui). Follow the clues and see if you can keep up with the brilliant mind of Detective Kaga.

Professional Review of "The Wings Of The Kirin (2012) (DVD) (Taiwan Version)"

October 26, 2012

This professional review refers to The Wings Of The Kirin (2012) (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
Abe Hiroshi returns as popular Japanese literary figure Detective Kaga Kyoichiro, appearing on the big screen for the first time after several popular television adaptations of the Higashino Keigo novels. Wings of the KirinHanamizuki), Tanaka Rena (The Tale of Genji), and Nakai Kiichi (Once in a Blue Moon).

The film starts in intriguing fashion, with businessman Takeaki Aouyagi (Nakai Kiichi) being found dead on the famous Nihonbashi Bridge in Tokyo, having staggered there after being stabbed, for some reason choosing to collapse beneath the Kirin statue rather than trying to reach a hospital. A young man called Yashima (Miura Takahiro) is discovered near the scene with some of the victim's belongings, though is hit by a lorry after fleeing and falls into a coma before he can be questioned. Although Yashima certainly seems to fit the bill, being a disgruntled former worker from the dead man's factory, Detective Kaga soon comes to believe that there is more to the case, and along with his partner and cousin Matsumiya Yuhei (Mizobata Junpei) starts to dig deeper, questioning Yashima's girlfriend Kaori Nakahara (Aragaki Yui) and even Takeaki's own son.

Wings of the Kirin was directed by Doi Nobuhiro, known mainly for his work on series like Manhattan Love Story, and so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the film does feel rather like an extended television episode, closely resembling the earlier hit Detective Kaga special Shinzanmono. The film is certainly more measured and slower paced than many other big screen genre outings, though this works in its favour, giving it a different and more thoughtful feel. Doi Nobuhiro balances plot and character drama very effectively throughout, and while the film is at over two hours quite long, it never feels overstretched, weaving an intricate and multi-layered stabbing mystery. Playing out through grounded detective work, the narrative does for the most part revolve around conversations and flashbacks, never resorting to the usual kind of chase scenes or action which other similarly themed films tend to throw in to try and keep things exciting. Instead, Doi Nobuhiro's direction is mature and confident, the film never rushing and keeping the audience engaged through subtle clues and emotional character development.

As well as it's well constructed script, the film's other main strength is the strong central turn from the ever dependable Abe Hiroshi, who's great as Detective Kaga. With a performance that's both understated and charismatic, he suggests an intellectual and philosophical approach to life and his work which makes him a likeable and interesting protagonist and one of the more memorable screen bloodhounds of late - it's easy to see why the novels and prior adaptations have proved so popular. The rest of the cast understandably play second fiddle, though the film is generally rich in character, with a lot of thought obviously having gone into fleshing out their various motives and relationships. Although the film does get a bit melodramatic in places, it is as a result a very involving and substantial tale, and one which has many rewards for patient viewers.

Wings of the Kirin is definitely catching, both for fans of Detective Kaga and the Higashino Keigo novels, and for newcomers and Japanese crime aficionados in general, no prior knowledge of the character being required. Though clocking in with a weighty running time, there's more than enough going on to hold the interest, and the attention paid to both character and story makes it a gripping and pleasingly adult watch.

Brilliantly conceived mystery story Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Aoyagi (Nakai Kiichi) staggers toward the kirin statues mounted on Nihonbashi, the Tokyo bridge famed as the starting point for all of Japan's roads. When Aoyagi collapses, a policeman comes to assist - assuming he is intoxicated - only to find a knife protruding from his abdomen. Police in the area are alerted to seek an assailant. A suspicious young man heedlessly flees arrest, running straight into the path of an oncoming truck. Yashima (Miura Takahiro, son of iconic couple Miura Tomokazu and Yamaguchi Momoe), the young man now lying comatose in a hospital, is found to have had the wallet and briefcase of the deceased stabbing victim.

Dogged detective Kaga (Abe Hiroshi) is unconvinced that the solution to this crime is quite as obvious as it seems, even after he learns that Yashima recently had been fired by the manufacturer at which Aoyagi served as production chief. "The Wings of the Kirin" follows Kaga and his investigating partner Matsumiya (Mizobata Junpei) as they relentlessly pursue the truth, shunning all the easy answers. For those unfamiliar with Nihonbashi and the nearby shrines, I recommend spending a few moments researching them before watching this film; legends associated with these sites play a key part in Kaga's unraveling of the mystery lying behind this not-so open-and-shut case.

Director Doi Nobuhiro uses Higashino Keigo's police procedural story as a vehicle for a series of insightful character studies, as the two investigators dig into the lives of Yashima, Aoyagi, and those connected with them. The film features standout performances from Abe, Nakai, and, as Yashima's girlfriend, Aragaki Yui. "The Wings of the Kirin" unfortunately becomes overly talky in its final twenty minutes and, strangely, one of the film's central characters, whom Kaga knows is responsible for a life-changing crime, goes unpunished. These flaws diminish what, up to those final minutes, had been an absorbing and perplexing mystery.
