YesAsia Editorial Description

Four years after Confessions, director Nakashima Tetsuya makes a blood-drenched return to the big screen with The World of Kanako, an adaptation of the award-winning mystery novel by Fukamachi Akio. In one of the fiercest performances of his career, Yakusho Koji stars as a disgraced detective who is asked by his ex-wife to search for their missing daughter. What follows is an intense, twisted ride into the darkest corners of human nature. Nakashima once again delivers a full-frontal assault on the senses that will shock and awe audiences.

Fujishima Akikaku (Yakusho Koji) is a disgraced detective now living a sad existence as a security guard. One day, his ex-wife tells him that their daughter Kanako (Komatsu Nana) has suddenly gone missing. Carrying the delusion that finding Kanako would give him back the happy family life he once had, Akikaku goes on a reckless rampage in search of his daughter, harassing everyone around her for any information he can dig up. Soon, he discovers that Kanako's innocent image has only been a façade as he starts putting together a long list of her sins.

This edition includes making of, stage events, an interview with Fukamachi Akio and trailers. It also comes with the film's soundtrack on a bonus CD.

In-your-face brilliance
In 2010, Nakashima Tetsuya found his biggest commercial success with Confessions, a grim tale of vengeance that was only presentable to a mainstream audience due to the filmmaker’s stylistic handling of the subject matter. Nakashima’s follow-up, The World of Kanako follows a similar formula, but the filmmaker’s unique visual sensibility isn’t enough to lighten one of the most relentlessly brutal mainstream films in 2014.

Taking on possibly the most vile character of his distinguished career, Yakusho Koji (Shall We Dance?) stars as Fujishima, a disgraced and divorced detective who is now a barely functional alcoholic. One day, his ex-wife calls to tell him that their daughter Kanako (newcomer Komatsu Nana) has gone missing. A short-tempered man made worse by his current state, Fujishima dives into the search headfirst and discovers that his seemingly innocent daughter isn’t nearly as pure as he had remembered her.

The thing that sets Kanako - based on an award-winning novel by Fukamachi Akio - apart from its genre counterparts is Nakashima’s courage to tell the story through the eyes of a thoroughly detestable character. Without giving away anything, Fujishima is easily one of the most despicable anti-hero in recent memory, committing more atrocious acts than most characters in the film. The only reason that we can cheer for Fujishima is that Kanako and the other villains are even worse people, and fire can sometimes indeed be fought with fire.

In an interview, Nakashima said that many big-name actors – including Yakusho, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Odagiri Joe and Nakatani Miki – said yes to his film because they are so hungry to play dark roles that sharply contrast the nice, clean characters they’re usually offered. Though it can be a very difficult film to sit through, Kanako is a wicked, intense thriller that is impossible to ignore.

Unlike the lullaby-like rhythm of typical Japanese commercial films, The World of Kanako is a film that takes its audiences by the shoulders and shakes them into submission. Parts of the plot don’t quite come together (one parallel plotline doesn’t yield much results by its protracted end), but Nakashima’s technical techniques give audiences so little room to breathe that plot inconsistencies are only minor nitpick in this accomplished, but hugely disturbing work. In other words, welcome back, Nakashima Tetsuya.
